The homestuck quadrants are a system of romantic relationships used in troll society. All four relationships have different dynamics and purposes, and typically only one includes three members. This was all written by memory, by the way. Please help me.

The quadrants:

Matespritship;

moirallegience;

kismesissitude;

and auspisticism.

Starting with matespritship, this is most commonly compared to human romantic relationships. The feelings surrounding this relationship is typically called ‘love,’ but is also rumoured to be an evolved form of ‘pity.’ Matespritship relationship members would call each other their ‘matesprit.’ Matespritship is one of the two quadrants that are often used for reproductive purposes, the other one being Kismesissitude. It is represented by the heart (<3, ♡,) and is part of the ‘red romance’ side of the quadrants.

Moving on to moirallegience, this is a close bond between (usually) two people. Its purpose is to provide many things for each other, some examples being protection, support, or guidance. Members of a moirallegience would call each other their ‘moirail.’ It is one of the two quadrant relationships not commonly used for reproduction, the other one being auspisticism. It’s represented by the diamond (<>, ♢,) and is part of the ‘red romance’ side of the quadrants.

Next up is part of the ‘black romance’ half. Kismesissitude is an especially strong and hate filled rivalry. In fact, their hatred for each other is so strong that it becomes ‘pity’ or ‘mating fondness.’ People in a kismesissitude would call each other their ‘kismesis’, the plural of this being ‘kismeses.’ Kismesissitude is the other quadrant that provides genetic material for reproduction. It’s representation being the spade (<3<, ♤,) as stated before, it is part of the ‘black romance’ side of the quadrants.

For the final, and most interesting (in my opinion) quadrant, we have auspisticism. Auspisticism is described as a typically three-way relationship where only one member has feelings (for the other two.) It is characterized by possible red or black romance feelings for two members, who are stuck in an intense rivalry, that otherwise may become a kismesissitude. Auspisticism is different from kismesissitude in how it is actually used to PREVENT kismesissitude, as otherwise infidelity and rampant violence would take over, due to troll species being intensely hot-headed (at least as shown in hivebent.) It isn’t used for reproduction, as the feelings are implied to only be held by one person. Due to this, one person can be in two auspisticisms, just as different roles. It is represented by the club (o8<, ♧,) and is the second and final ‘black romance’ quadrant.
