Kind of a broad topic but! I really have a fascination with animated movies, for me personally stuff from the 80s to early 2000s! And I'd love to find others to discuss movies with :D

So for this thread feel free to just discuss movies you like, recommend some, certain studios you like, types of animation, anything goes!

To start it off, my personal favorites are The Last Unicorn. The visuals of this movie are GORGEOUS and as a art history nerd it scratches such an itch in my brain!!! The whole movie just perfectly captures the vibe of old medieval art and tapestries completely (specifically The Hunt of The Unicorn series) I originally watched the movie as a kid but I rediscovered it and now it's always in my head!

(Especially after reading the book. If anyone enjoys the themes of this movie PLEASE I encourage checking out the book, it's overall pretty short but it adds so much!!! Such as the fact that Schmendrick the Magician is also immortal, this is why he takes such a liking to the unicorn! anyways ill stop myself there on that haha.)

My other favorite being Watership Down, similar boat to The Last Unicorn where the book is better but the voice acting in this movie is so so good. As well as the visuals. I love that the rabbits are honestly? Kind of ugly in some parts? It feels gritty and fitting for the book.

I love The Last Unicorn. I always wished Howl's Moving Castle had a movie in that style, rather than becoming a Ghibli movie.

I'm a big fan of the xerox era of animated movies. Like, that scratchy lineart you see in the era of movies that almost killed Disney. They look so energetic.

The 70s and 80s were also a very good time for Japanese OVAs. Some of my favourite from that time include the first Vampire Hunter D movie, and Cyber City Oedo 808. I also like VHD Bloodlust.

I've been binging a bunch of studio ghibli movies again recently. Just amazing films overall.
Ever since I was a kid i've also been a hugeee coraline fan, stop motion animation is seriously underated! It still holds up great to this day.

@Alternianclown you're right, stop motion is amazing and i wish more people would recognize that!!!! one of my friends recommended a stop motion horror film called Mad God, but i haven't seen it yet myself so i can't give a full rec atm

normally i don't watch anthologies but the other night i watched the Animatrix (despite not having seen any of the matrix movies) and it was pretty good??? the shorts were of varying quality but the stuff that was Good was Really Good and there was SO MUCH fun animation

i will figure out a good signature. Eventually.

@sanhait: Yeah I recently learned about the xerox era of movies in class recently (my college has a Disney History class which is cool), it was a style of animation I had always noticed but never knew the name of! As for OVAs I've never really looked into those for some reason, i've always been interested in the style of them though!

@alternianclown: Stop motion is super underrated!! And Coraline is still a fave of mine I watch it every Halloween :)!

@calamitycodified: I havent actually heard of the Animatrix before! the Matrix is fucking awesome and this intrigues me. Same with Mad God that looks insane I need to see it

@pseudoentomologist: I kept seeing clips of memoir of a snail but never knew its name! So ty for that. Watership Down is a great movie but I will warn to those who don't know the book's story may find the movie a bit confusing or weird in some areas as it's the bones of the book's story. Like story beats are there but very much stripped of most of the stuff in there. But I still think its worth a watch!

ive never seen the last unicorn. well its on my watchlist now !

my favorite movies of all time are tokyo godfathers, lu over the wall and roujin-z. i also often quote redline because that shit was a miracle.

i also really like the stop-motion pinocchio adaptation from GDT and wendell & wild from selick & peele. i do prefer that one than coraline, but coraline is definitely a classic.

sincerely, literally feferi peixes
