it would be cool if we'd got callie to experiment with gender more! Meat!Callie is the reason why they put the detransition tag on the epilogues, she used to Literally And Textually be a woman in a man's body (although you could make the case that both caliborn and calliope are trans in an undertale ghost way, but it would be. something. if the Force Of Toxic Masculinity was a trans man) and now theyre rejecting their previous identity bc they dont want to be defined by Not Being Caliborn. which makes sense, but I would like to see more gender exploration

re: nautilus i am definitely in the camp that caliborn is transmasc and callie is transfem because they dont really have one gender until one of them dominates. any wish to have more control and autonomy over the body can manifest as a desire to present more heavily in one way or another. i dont think caliborn would consider himself transgender, but i definitely think it fits well for callie.

i love the idea of callie moving more towards being nonbinary and she/they after she gets a few years to have her body be fully hers and present the way that they fully want to. she ends up in a much more supportive, loving situation and reexamines herself and how she wants to be in the process. i really enjoy that and i personally find it very relatable. i think it especially does make sense when you consider how strongly she had to argue and advocate for her own gender growing up. when she isnt constantly fighting to be recognized and respected and loved she gets a space to experiment more with what feels best for her.

also i think it/its or other neopronouns would do callie well but thats just my two cents lol

Aye, I feel like whatever Callie's gender may be, it's complicated by the fact that they're an alien with a VERY different biology and culture, while also living among and fascinated by trolls and humans. I get the impression cherubs are biological hermaphrodites throughout their lifespan, with male and female personalities superimposed over the top. Callie and Caliborn switch control of their body with only superficial changes like the cheeks and tongue, which could just be chromatophores. As adults, cherub mating is described as quite similar to snails, which are hermaphrodites: the winner of the mating duel impregnates the loser. (Yes, snails do blackrom!) The same happens with cherubs, even if the loser is male.

....and Calliope doesn't show much attachment to traditional cherub gender or romance. They are in a long-term non-blackrom relationship with a human, for a start! Gender is already far more mental than physical in their species, and now she's negotiating all kinds of stuff with her past baggage and the culture they're currently living in. I do also get strong "she/they" vibes off how Callie is written, so I tend to go with that, but I struggle to find an exact human analogy for her gender.

I had more thoughts about it based off my personal experience, and I wonder if this analogy makes sense?

Some people will use they/them pronouns and identify as nonbinary for a period of time before they transition to a binary gender. It's sort of like a stepping stone for some people! I wonder if Calliope has a similar stepping stone phase.

I will not I have not personally gone through this with my gender, but I have experienced something similar with my therianthropy/otherkinity (because honestly, im not even sure i would be described as a therian anymore). So I'm not sure how accurate this is, but it is something I saw friends go through and I think it makes sense for Calliope's situation. I mean, Roxy does it too in Meat!
