Can Homestuck work in another medium?
I think Homestuck can work in animation. the main arguments I see are people saying: A, you really make Homestuck feel like it's mirroring a video game unless it's in an MSPA format, and B, how in the world are the typing quirks and chat logs gonna fit into this? This is what I would do if I were trying to make Homestuck in an animated medium.
1. Show the characters fucking around: I think if you skillfully show the character's reasonning for their actions through their internal thoughts and or dialogue, and combine that with the characters exploring their environments, collecting objects and using them in certain ways while fucking around you can replicate the feel of watching someone mess around in a video game. A show written by Hussie or someone who can mirror his very unique writing style will be able to accomplish this.
2. the chat logs/typing quirks: When it fits the scene, specifically when it's a more casual scene of just two characters chatting, it could work to have a split screen of both characters typing with a box in the bottom center of the screen, like this:
And I think this will be better cause the quirks could fucking SUCK at times. NOW I know that's a hot take, and I'm not saying I would prefer Homestuck without them! I like the quirks a lot! the quirks can be confusing, though. Have you tried reading Vriska say the word 'bait'?? I assume you have if you're here, and it's just two eights like this '88'. How tf do you decipher that? Also, Feferi, a great character, barely had any speaking pages cause her quirk, though cool and creative, sucked to write and read. NOW AGAIN!!!! I DO NOT HATE, DISLIKE, OR THINK THE QUIRKS ARE BAD!!!! I'm just saying it's not the end of the world that every convo won't be written.
3. Utilizing video game UI: I think using video game aesthetics, like they do in any of the Scott Pilgrim adaptationS, is super cool, and this will be super easy since Homestuck already has video game aesthetics basically baked into it with Sburb, Strifing, and Sylladex's, so its a no brainer this will be in every adapptation at least a little bit.
Do I think Hussie is going to be adding any of this to the pilot, and that the pilot should be viewed as something that's supposed to be a completely faithful adaptation of Homestuck? absolutely not! Judging by the trailer, Hussie will be doing what I mentioned in the third option, but other than that, I doubt it will feel like a game the same way written Homestuck does. the 4th thing I think you'd need for a faithful Homestuck adaptation is making sure everyone knows that whatever you're doing IS NOT GOING TO BE COMPLETELY FAITHFUL BECAUSE HOMESTUCK IS SUPPOSED TO BE WRITTEN. Furthermore, there's only so much you can do with JUST a pilot that, as far as I know, is gonna be less than half an hour, which sounds like a lot, but...cmon, its homestuck. in conclusion, you can make adapt Homestuck to other mediums, and have it feel like homestuck, but it'll be hard, and not definitely completely faithful.
anyway! I would like to hear other people's opinions on adapting Homestuck, other problems/reasons an adaptation wouldn't work, and reasons it could. Please note that this isn't a post about the upcoming pilot, but just a general post about adapting Homestuck that mentions the upcoming pilot, cause there really isn't any way not to lol.
This is like the third thread on this topic

it can't, so it'll be interesting to see what they do with it. i care more about it being a good show than it being 1:1 accurate.
