Oh hey! You're how I know about Higurashi, on a different Homestuck site a while ago.

It makes me really sad that there's people on this planet that don't know Rena. How does one live without having a picture of her to look at every day.

Anyway, huge true. Rena is an amazing character! Crazy how one moeblob can simultaneously be excellent comic relief, the source of some of the most bone chilling horror, and also one of the most empathetic portrayals of mental illness I've ever seen!

perfect thread for me bc I brought Umineko but never played it T_T I am a huge Higurashi fan though lol. Anyways, yall wanna go to the Watanagashi festival with me this year, I heard it's gonna be awesome. Shame about the murders that happen each year :/ but like I'm excited for the fireworks you know.

You will read Higurashi. This is not a request. When you do I highly recommend using 07th-mod (https://07th-mod.com/) it adds a lot of features from previous versions of Higurashi and gives you a good variety of options for you to read it however you prefer. (and also escape from the vile MangaGamer art)

i read all of chapters 1 through 7 before finding out about 7th mod, and now knowing 7th mod is the only way to play the console arcs on pc and the way the look wouldn't be consistent with the unmodded arcs on pc has led me to start back at chapter 1 with 7th mod installed instead of just moving on like a normal person lol! on the bright side despite reading them for the first time less than a year ago it is enjoyable experiencing them again with knowledge of future events, this is an amazing story that i'm excited to see the ending to!

@chaotictundra Fwiw, I've heard some incredibly mixed things about the console exclusive stuff (especially as it pertains to the effort to tone down the original's more progressive politics), and none of it's really written by Ryukishi, so your mileage may vary, there. I do think both aesthetics look good, though! Even if I find some of Alchemist's aesthetic choices puzzling. The original art will always be the winner in my book (and MangaGamer's art the forever loser).

Hope you enjoy the ending! Matsuribayashi-hen still remains far and away one of my favorite finales to a novel series.

thanks, i'll keep the comments on the extra arcs in mind! i still plan to read them for completeness's sake but it will be very helpful going into them with lowered expectations/consciousness of people's issues with them. also, a bit late but RE: the sentiment towards Rena at the beginning of the thread, i totally agree! she's easily my favorite member of the cast, and the main reason why chapter 6 is my favorite!

i read the manga back when i didn't have time for the vn, should i go through the vn before i read umineko or am i fine?

@octoambush I'd say the manga for Higurashi is a pretty good approximation, all told. There are bits and pieces here and there that the VN does better (particularly toward the beginning, which is faster paced in adaptation than the answer arcs) but I'd be way more confident saying it and the VN are alike than the anime.

For Umineko, the VN is required reading. Though the Episode 7 and 8 manga are also huge recommends once you finish it, since they actually go out of their way to add stuff not in the VN which Ryukishi oversaw.

(In all seriousness higurashi was a formative piece of media for me in like. Middle school or high school either or they kinda blend together. Regardless, Rika's character journey is one of my favorites in anything ever. Ryukishi really is the GOAT.)

has anyone here played the KINO that is Higurashi Daybreak? ive only played the psp version but im not sure if the other releases are better

@m I've played Daybreak Portable, yeah. Never played the PC releases, though. It's always been a little sensory overload for me, though lol.

@m never heard of it :0 is it a console exclusive arc? or a spinoff kinda thing?

@runyx Daybreak is a sort of strange third-person shooter/3D arena fighter hybrid spinoff game by Twilight Frontier. It's very hectic lol.
