I love Calliope, but what do you all think of her?
Hiya. Just a random question, but you know what a majority vote is?
I like her. I mean, for fuck's sake, she's literally me, fr fr!
(memes aside, I think she's very cool and I like her)
I'm kinda neutral on Calliope, mostly because she feels really like the most passive person in the webcomic proper (by design) so it's kinda hard to. Ig gauge her?
The trouble with Calliope is that she hardy does anything of note. obviously this is intentional as a muse, but it often feels like she‘s just wasted space. then again, I think (alt) her bit about being a bystande, someone who the war is theoretically fought for but whose choices and life don’t matter to the soldiers, was very interesting.
This is some straight up delirious biznasty, Dawg!!
Awesome.
there. can you hear it? of course you can’t. but if even you could, it would sound like nothing at all.
One of the best parts of Act 6 /gen (and i actually like act 6 so im saying something)
(suppose i gotta say this is spoilers even tho calliope is late game stuff)
most robbed of relevance character ever, she deserves the world.
mostly enjoyed how her role as a muse is portrayed since she's like actually bothered about casual spoilers and such but it just so happens a lot of the things the alpha kids end up doing is based around the convos she shares with em. also, really liked that, the Candy Timeline, is technically partly her doing¿? or i guess, narrated, by her to some degree
wait what the hecky is a signature
RE: Shadowrevue
yeah, as someone who's favorite act is act 6; Calliope is probably my favorite part of act 6 despite not showing up in one of my candidates for favorite act 6 act.
Hiya. Just a random question, but you know what a majority vote is?
Calliope is one of my all time favorite characters!!
Boring. I don't remember anything about her, unfortunately. But, to be fair, I just hate Homestuck and refuse to reread it, so that probably hinders my outlook on many aspects of the story.
calliope is silly and cute. good poster 10/10
also @hanniGram
I don't mean this aggressively, but why are you here then? genuinely curious
the epilogues are the best part of homestuck
Wish there was an edit button. But anyway yeah, I love how she interacts with the kids, callieroxy is one of my fav ships, a lot of my friends when we were reading Homestuck kept saying "she's literally you" so i feel a strong kinship with her, and I love her role in the story as like, a love-letter to the fans and fandom, while also representing fun things like, the idea of someone who knows everything there is to know about classpecting, but is wrong a lot of the time. There's also the whole exploration with gender! Bc they are from a very dichotomous species, they view gender as a strict binary, and this affects info they give on classpecting, and I believe how they wrote/recorded the Candy epilogues. Getting to see them explore being non-binary in the meat timeline was awesome, and I'd love to see more of that, and just more of Callie in general!
i actually think it's an interesting thought exercise to look at calliope's passivity from a similar perspective as her belief in gendered classes, i.e. it's not entirely true and largely self imposed.
because, well, gendered classes were confirmed to be not true and a misunderstanding on her part, and looking at it it's pretty clear why the idea is appealing to her: cherubs already have their whole thing with duality, and extrapolating that cultural idea onto sburb as a whole makes sense for a character who spends her days in isolated misery with the only promised escape being the game. because, it's important to note, that for a lot of characters, and calliope especially, sburb isn't just a game, but a representation of fate and cosmic purpose.
especially with the way "fate" in homestuck works in time loops and self-fulfilling prophecies, the question is whether characters do certain things because they are fated to do it, or if they are fated to do it because they were going to do the thing anyway. and calliope's stance as a character who is aware of her mythological role before ever entering the game, this question becomes even more poignant: is she so passive because she is a muse, or does she know she is a muse and therefore act so passive? the differences between alt calliope and alpha timeline calliope are also relevant, considering the way alt calliope describes her predomination over caliborn is by "wearing him down", and this is the version of her that had no contact with the outside world. we could kind of view the difference as the calliope that fully committed to the passivity of her role, her loneliness, won while the calliope that tried to resist it by making friends with the alpha kids lost. and, yet, a the end of the day, "realizing your full potential as per sburb dictates" is clearly not a good thing, considering one of them went on to become a villainous, cold overseer and the other gets to hang out with friends and live a happy life.
calliope believing she is "forever fated to be the most passive" is a very comforting belief for her to have, because believing in her mythological role so dearly means she gets to give her misery a purpose. it means that if she gets really really good at doing nothing about her situation, she will get to fix it. it means her life will sort itself out, if she just accepts everything as it comes. i think this is what is actually cool about her character, and why more people should be critical of taking everything she says about sburb as fact - she is very biased! she was put in a situation specifically manufactured for her to die, and told that her cosmic purpose is to just take it, forever. i think calliope is very interesting as a character who's probably the most invested in the idea of a cosmic fate game despite being in probably the worst possible situation as a sburb player, in a comic with on the whole is very critical of sburb.
i think more people should be less trusting of the things she says about sburb, especially about her own classpect, is my overall point.
Brilliant character. Fascinating. Underexamined too, especially with comparing her to Caliborn. We all agree that severing the two stunted Caliborn's growth forever, but few bring that back to Calliope.
@lizardayna It's also visible in how Alt Calliope insists that she's dead and not alive despite death being a fairly nebulous condition in Homestuck.
Magic is FAKE AS SHIT/FUCKING REAL
shes peak i wish more people paid attention to her
I love that green snake-skeleton creature she must be protected
-- The Butch
Top 3 favorite character to me personally, often times takes the top spot.
took the quiz and ended up having her same Classpect before i even read far enough to meet her lol
i don't like her very much, but it's hard to blame her for it if that makes any sense. i am generally pretty negative on the majority of act 6, one of the reasons being an over-reliance on characters who were thinly veiled representations of various sections of the fandom. callie to me is very symptomatic of the second one. her and caliborn being at their cores caricatures of "wholesome" and "toxic" fanartists just killed any motivation i had to get invested or interested in either of them, even if they were later fleshed out more than that.
disregarding all the meta reasons and focusing just on her as a character, i usually ended up skimming her chatlogs but i never had any strong opinions on her. the roxy romance felt a little shoehorned to me, but i could say that about a lot of relationships in the back half of the comic. she (or alt callie? whichever, it's been 10 years) provided some interesting context/worldbuilding on the nature of dead sessions, so as someone who is a big nerd about the mechanics of sburb she gets some major points for that.
i'd say overall she's fine. she's far from my least favorite character in that era of the comic, she had some interesting stuff going on, but for the most part just didn't do much for me. alt callie was pretty boss though.
wish i could edit! "of the second one" in the above post refers to a different gripe i have about act 6 that i removed because it wasn't actually relevant to callie
Calliope is one of the top tier Homestuck characters in my humble opinion.
