as i think we're all aware of what's going on with UHC and Hussie/HICU, do you think there is any cause for concern regarding current and future fan works or projects associated with homestuck?

i'm not super up to date about the exact legal matters going on, but should we worry about this setting a precedent for fan works moving forward?

I don't think so. Apparently most FRAF/HICU members didn't have to sign any NDAs or anything of the sort, so this seems to just be false.

There's a lot of testimonials on Bluesky floating around.

that's assuring! i would imagine the endorsement via allowing these forums is also a good sign for these works too as least.

Yeah, seconding docscratch.

People are reasonably upset about the UHC being taken down, I get that, but the ones claiming that this is the end of Homestuck fanworks or the start of a fandom dark age are kind of overreacting. The UHC wasn't a fanventure, it was an unlicensed republishing. There's been no indication from anyone other than Gio that Hussie has any intention of messing with the fandom's original works.

Thank you for clarification. I appreciate it very much.

I mean, I do think that it's valid to be worried about where this site will end up considering the example Gio's blog post sets in terms of fans working directly with the HS team. No matter whose "side" you're on, we know for certain that Hussie and/or the HICU were working with the Collection developers, and that it obviously fell through. But if the creators here say it's fine, they know more than I do, I'm not going to "nuh uh!" them.

MSPFA mods are pretty unconcerned too, IMO this situation just comes off as a personal beef between Hussie and Gio (despite Gio's insistence that it's deeper than that), regardless of whoever you think is in the right. I've yet to see anyone actually involved in any significant fan works or fan work hosts that was concerned.

If anything, the only harm for fan works here is Gio insisting that you not spend any money supporting FRAF/HSBU/etc because the money from those goes to Hussie (Gio provided no proof for that claim, and it's been stated many times before that the profits from sales go into paying the teams working on all of this stuff). That, and this whole thing has really marred the idea of officially supported fan works, and unless there's a really strong response from the team this whole ordeal may leave a permanent scar. Ironic, ey?

@Hobsyllwin re: money going to hussie

For what it's worth, I've talked with FRAF leadership and they confirmed Hussie gets money from at least the sales on this site.

To clarify a bit on what Makin said with some specifics on what cuts are taken on a FRAF Creators Merch in our storefront:

- A small cut is taken by FRAF for operating the storefront and mostly goes towards paying for our website costs, funding more ambitious endeavors to support the creators, and hopefully compensating us a bit for our time making this thing if there's much left over.

- A small cut goes to What Pumpkin for handling our financials (Payout, taxes, etc.) because they have good existing infrastructure to do so. I would like to note that I have been given the option to absorb this cost if I take on these responsibilities myself, and still might, but that's a lot to take on and at least at this time I do believe the service they provide us is worth the small cost we pay them.

- A small cut goes to Homestuck Inc. as the IP holder, which is Andrew Hussie's company. While I have heard (mostly from Makin so like, take it with a grain of salt) other licenses out in the wild might have a larger HS inc cut than us, I was able to work out a genuinely really good deal here for the creators under my FRAF license.

- A large majority of the profit goes to the creator, which they are free to do with however they wish.

Outside of the Merch sales, the creators have not been asked for any cuts or royalties on any other revenue sources they have.

If you intend to boycott FRAF because you dislike Andrew Hussie, I would like to note that you would be hurting FRAF and the creators much more than you would be hurting Andrew Hussie. Andrew isn't really getting much out of this at all. Even still, if this is your goal I would still encourage you to check out any Patreons and Ko-Fis the creators have listed on their project pages to still support them directly.

@Cami Thank you for posting specific claims, I can confirm this is what I was referring to in my post. Credit to you and everyone who's sharing details instead of attacking sources.

From what I've hearing, Gio and Hussie have been at daggers drawn for like 6 years by now. If anything, it's extraordinary that Hussie has allowed somebody who openly hates him to host an unofficial clone of Homestuck for so long. That doesn't sound like someone who's about to unleash the Fanworkspocalypse.
