perhaps the most controversial and challenging questions in homestuck. i propose that it is real for those who believe in it, and fake for those who don't, but that those who don't believe in it cannot stop it being real for someone else, and that someone else can still use magic on the one who doesn't believe in it so long as they themselves believe in it.
excited to see bundles of evidence that I'm wrong. together we can figure out the answer to this ancient riddle
the epilogues are the best part of homestuck
Magic is fake as fuck. Evidence, eridan said it is, and he's never been wrong.
Hiya. Just a random question, but you know what a majority vote is?
Of course it's real, you can go and buy a card set right now! I heard they're doing Spider Man or something.
I think magic and science are one in the same? Like sburb is by all means magic but it's coded into reality so......
I don't know that I strictly agree that magic is real primarily for those who believe in it, but I do absolutely think whether people believe in it or not is a big part of the point.
Homestuck is really big on the importance of "ideas", and the key thing about magic is that the idea of magic clearly exists and is undeniable. So when Rose combines the idea of a wizard - even when that wizard is a statue and is, as such, a "fake" wizard - what do we expect to happen? Hussie talks about this a lot in the book commentary and I think it's such an interesting aspect of alchemy. Like, the idea that nothing you create is ever really new because you're creating ideas, which have always existed... as Scratch says, there is "nothing new in Paradox Space".
>eats somewhere other than olive garden once
>fucking dies
re: the1woomy
magic is actually real cuz eridan said it's fake and he was WRONG about everything, im afraid
Magic is real, because Rose said so, and Rose is very cool and impressive.
This post was a Magic Mirror production. Problem Soothe, now playing in a theater near you: https://magic-mirror.neocities.org/problemsoothe/ps0000

Magic in Homestuck is a broad topic. There really isn't anything that separates John's stage magic from Rose's forbidden occult lore from Roxy's old men with beards and robes. It's kind of like how Light represents luck, and also other things simultaneously but you really shouldn't try splitting them apart. Much like real life, trying to get a strict definition of magic is exceedingly difficult.
Magic also coincides with belief. Not just the belief in magic, but where and how characters put their faith. Vriska believes in herself, so she has all the luck. John isn't quite as self-confident, but has complete faith in his friends which makes him the leader that other people can believe in. Eridan clearly does believe in magic but tries to deny it; leaving him with warped perspectives and priorities.
Most importantly, magic enhances but never provides. There is a contemporary view on magic as being "special powers that let you do whatever for no reason" popularized by somebody I hope dies in the near future. Few characters in Homestuck expect this out of magic; and they all fail because of it. The most successful magic users are those who supplement their own practical efforts with magic.
Magic is FAKE AS SHIT/FUCKING REAL
