I think a lot of people are under the assumption that Andrew Hussie wants nothing to do with Homestuck or preserving it or whatever, and that situations like this could be a slippery slope of them one day doing something else with Homestuck (I saw on reddit people are afraid this could lead to takedowns of other mirrors that host Homestuck or even paywalling Homestuck etc) But I am just not sure this whole situation is similar to the fandom takedowns of yore where the creator goes full Anne Rice and takes down whole fanfiction archives because it has her characters names in them. This does just seem like there was a personal matter we don't know about that neither of them has revealed that led to this.

But I think most people are actually just afraid of the precedent this could set. However, I will say I don't think something like that will happen because it is a bit fearmongery and also Andrew Hussie explicitly likes fanworks and has made this entire forum possible because they like fanworks. I doubt Andrew Hussie would go through the trouble of getting people licenses for homestuck and making a whole independent branch of his brand that focuses purely on fan made content if he wanted to control every single aspect of his work including fanworks.

In my opinion, Gio's second article is just a vain attempt at trying to throw suspicion onto people who have nothing to do with the actual problem at hand because he's just paranoid that anything associated with hussie is tainted and controlled by him (which just isn't true)

It has also been brought to my attention over on the reddit that while Hussie obviously owns homestuck, he doesn't "own" the reader that Gio and Bambosh coded to be able to view Homestuck.

The Homestuck fandom is the most nonchalant about most outrageous shit and the most unhinged about the most normal stuff you've ever seen

the THING IS when it comes to making this community a less racist, transphobic, misogynist place you have to be discerning and follow your gut about people. if youve ever experienced real world discrimination then you know how hard it is to be able to quantify/"prove" your experiences in a way that would win you a discrimination suit. thats why communities have to be able to have trust in each other to keep out discriminatory behaviors. yes...i am asking the homestuck community to trust the creator's judgement. and yeah i am aware that means also trusting the creator's biases (ie andrew's bias against gio as a human being). i know thats not what anyone wants to do or hear, but im close with at least the bc team and i trust them. i trust miles. idk if anyone knows my work or knows me from the community and trusts wtf i have to say but if anyone does then yea i hope my words reach those ppl.

and im not saying gio "discriminated" against andrew hussie, but gio did lead a harassment campaign against a trans woman teammember of homestuck. even if he did that in a super clean Im A Journalist fashion that makes it hard to create a case against him, its ok for andrew hussie to follow their gut and be like yea i dont trust this person and i dont want them in my fandom and i dont want them hosting my work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

seconding everything said in this thread, i really dont get why people find hussie dmca'ing gio so egregious when it is literally THEIR LIFE'S WORK. not just homestuck, but stuff like whistles and team special olympics too.

gios complaint isn’t with the copyright claim as in his article. his complaint is the dmca being used as a threat to try and intimidate him into removing his Hiveswap article.

in a happy perfect magical fantasy world where we all skip in the fields and play touys everyone could create and remix freely and without worry, no need for copyright because everyones needs are met and people are also very nicey about credits/attribution. But alas! we live in a society. and so we find ourselves in situations like this and even if you, as a person, are against copyright law as it currently exists and is used, one should be able to understand and comprehend the fact that we have to work within the world around us and that often involves using or doing things you dont like for the sake of protecting your work/livelihood/ass/etc. Perhaps that means DMCA'ing someone. perhaps that means setting up a licensing system So people who wish to remix your work and draw inspiration from it are allowed to do so and make money from it with more confidence.

Gio said in the blog post that Hussie is well within his rights to protect his copyrighted material and Gio complied with the request to remove it when it was given. Gio took offense to Hussie opening the conversation by having miles say that no legal threats were incoming and then reneging on this, and then using the threat of a dmca to try and bully Gio into removing the articles, which are gios intellectual property and not under hussies jurisdiction
