The last thread was in the wrong subforum so here we are.
Without love it cannot be seen.
I'm actually wondering how we're going to discuss this without spoiling a ton of people inadvertently...
Just spoil Higurashi instead, never let them know your next move.
That's it, I'm gonna do what I should have done a long time ago.
I'm going to beat him to death with this hammer.

As someone who's been going through it for almost a year now with friends, I've got to say: It's so peak. Genuinely, Ryukishi is a masterful writer. There's not many pieces of fiction that make me think as deeply and profoundly as Umineko has. It's another example "the length is what makes it worth reading" - Same with two of my other favorites, Homestuck and One Piece. I cannot recommend it enough.
Also, shoutout to my friend NezumiVA and her stream series of live reading it. She made approaching the VN so much more accessible AND her voices for the characters are perfect.
Why does this topic not have more replies, Umineko posting is Serious, Very Important Shit.

That one friend who's still on episode 3 of umineko after an entire year
@valantwynn
I will always be happy those livestreams are around because it got so many more people I know into WTC because lord knows it's impossible for me to do it on my own. I will definitely be checking them out if I'm itching to re-experience stuff at some point.
SPEAKING OF WHICH
@yanopi
You could have read 4 Uminekos by now this shit is not a joke. We will get you.
re: yanopi
You'd better be reading soon. Or else it's Over for you.

uu-uu!!
scroll up and down to make them jump!!
Appreciate the appreciation, @valantwynn and @m! Umineko is such a deeply special piece of media to me, and being able to help invest people/make it more accessible to them is something I will always count as having been entirely worth it (even if I did have to exhaust myself with VA work for 150+ hours to do it, lmfao).
Anybody in this thread smoke weed

I don't know what it's like to experience anything high but knowing how I am I don't think I would come back the same person if I read through Umineko high

thank you to whoever pinned this thread. seacats is true kino. i read the whole visual novel when i was way too young to really understand it, but god has it stuck with me ever since. i keep telling myself ill reread it but have yet to get stuck in!! now that ive read higurashi in the subsequent years im most curious how my knowledge of that will influence a reread of umineko - imagine reading umineko and not having a single clue about the meta context of lambda and bern (i can. it was me, age 14).
anyway, to meaningfully add to the thread - what are people's favouroute episodes? lowkey i am an episode 7 enjoyer just because of the total change of pace it brings.
ooh yeah this is tough episode 2 was kino episode 4 was kino episode 5 was kino episode 6 was kino episode 7 was kino ok actually this brings me to a point. it's funny but i think episode 8 is really underrated from what ive seen online. ep8 is really divisive in discussion about umineko and not as many people talk about it, probably for spoiler reasons but also a lot of people seemed to dislike it for some reason?
i think divisive is the best word for it. again, its been a long time since i played so i cant speak with total confidence, but i think one of the issues people had/have with it is that it doesn't feel "conclusive" enough. its...very similar to the reception to the hs ending in that sense, where the conclusion was more about the metatextual themes of the story than actually answering the questions of the plotty plot-plot, which given its a mystery story, did rub some folk the wrong way i think. and i do get where the criticism comes from! i love the answer arcs, but they don't really "answer" everything in the same way the higurashi ones do. its a different sort of story than higurashi, in ways that aren't immediately obvious.
there's also the supposed change/loss of editor sometime in the answer arcs, which people point to as the reason as to why they feel so different than the question arcs at times (whether that's true or not).
anyway. as for me, now that im older and more literarily mature, i really like ep8 and the conclusion it presents us. i think its the right way to end the story that umineko wanted to be. i do lowkey think the manga adaption of the answer arcs is a more well-rounded story though, and is better as telling umineko as a Story (compared to telling umineko as an Idea that i think becomes the focus of the vn in later episodes).
yeah, i think part of what made it so polarizing is that people saw themselves in the goats and instead of like, reflecting on it in any way they saw it as virtue signaling and an attack on their character. a lot of readers put on their serious hats about solving the mysteries and didn't like it being made light of or the idea that anything could be open ended even though the story was never presented the same way as a traditional murder mystery from the very start. i've noticed that a lot of people REALLY REALLY don't like thinking about a story after it's over, there's this idea that everything you open has to be shut at some point so you can just move on to the next thing and i personally have never understood it.
