now the Official Voices are just going to be another thing used to say that the kids are undeniably white ADSHJFJHD i feel like race as a Subject in homestuck should just be abandoned.. like any themes tackling whiteness/non whiteness that are present in the text, lets just ignore those and forget they happened ok? trying to fight against the reality that white people made these characters to be white and didn’t put much thought in it beyond that is like man. WHY DO WE EVEN TRY? AJKFKSJJK

I agree it does suck, but these are also just the main 4 kids there are other opportunities for representation but it definitely is sad. Also it's possible these aren't going to be the final voices, since it is a pilot.
black homestuck fans are fighting a million wars no one else would ever think about

Seriously? The team HAS to know what people will do with that. They HAVE to know how much ammo they just gave racist fans. This is like Caucasian all over again.
The characters have always been white unfortunately. I truly believe that Hussie was fucking with the fans when they first said they weren't as evidenced by the caucasian joke, and only really back peddled when it pissed people off more than expected. Hussie definitely doesn't care what we think these days especially when kids on twitter are somehow twisting racist things theyve done into actually being anti-racist.
(naive) here's hoping they don't just hire all white people for the rest of the very big cast of characters.
-stardustApotheosis
ngl if they only make the non-human brutish aliens POC thats gonna leave me with a way worse taste in my mouth than if they just did all white
everything u do is a balloon :)
This is NOT just stirring the pot, and I say that as someone who doesn't think this was an intentional decision or anything, it's most likely a matter of direct connections for a pilot, which could mean other problems but I just think there was likely a limited pool for the selection for the pilot and could change (va's change between a pilot and beginning of a series all the time)
re: yoylecake
agreed. the kids have a lot of white-coding and it feels like the aracial aspect was an afterthought (and this is coming from someone who does headcanon the kids as being POC). it feels like people use the aracial argument to ignore shit like the makaras and damara being racist stereotypes.
> i miss latula
i’d say the caucasian joke was the start of an intelligent thought on the default race being white in cartoon or video game characters. because when the characters take the trickster lollipop they experience extremely unnatural symptoms, whiteness being one of them.
but i don’t think andrew hussie ever took the thought further than a joke and really decided to commit to doing any sort of reversal with the fff white characters assumed races like Part Of The Story. and i dont really blame a white author for not touching something they don’t know anything about, but at the same time there is a LOT of racial subtext in homestuck (the condesce being a golliwog, dark skin denoting evil versions of the characters, dave’s obsession with black people and stuff like that) and without the author making a confident statement on what it all means within the work it’s left sort of floating in the air for any racists to co-opt with their chosen meanings.
i almost think the concept of aracial characters is more racist than just having them be 100% White Confirmed. because it just plays in the face of anyone who dares assert nonwhiteness as the “default” (the concept of defaultness is another reason why any further casting cant exactly make up for the 4 main kids being white) LOL people who try that in this fandom have just been whipped and beaten and fucking spat on for years and it will probably continue that way because when homestuck suggests we can make the characters nonwhite it’s only telling us a lie.

I honestly think Hussie didn’t even consider race when creating any of the characters, he just made them mostly white coded because he himself is white that’s what he has experience with. he then likely started describing them as aracial to avoid people criticizing him for making a cast of all white characters.
as for daves strange obsession with various black people, it was also in problem sleuth. I’m not sure what the intention was, if there was any.
This is some straight up delirious biznasty, Dawg!!
disagree entirely, caucasian joke in my eyes was always about trolling the fans who thought the characters were anything but white, hence Jake's "NOOOO!" reaction.
also hussie did think about their race since the beginning, John calls Bro white within like, the first act i think?
In my view,it came off as intended to troll those who were obsessed with the subject to the point of toxicity.
@yoylecake
nah it was the opposite actually (or at least that was the story given at the time). the main reason why it got changed was because it backfired HORRIFICALLY and was used as fuel for abuse by the ppl who didnt realize they were being made fun of. an attempt was made
at least in the years since folks have been able to do interesting write-ups and think-pieces about the concept of Becoming White as body horror
(and tbh? its a funnier punchline than peachy.)
re: Things like this just stir the pot.Not everything is done with race in mind, and acting like they can't be white is really no different than acting like that can't be black, and people who are racist are going to be such regardless of an adaptation, official or not.

im gonna take down at least one of these comments because (1) equating anti blackness to anti whiteness is racist and the exact reason we have discussions like this to begin with (2) your message fails to distinguish between the reactions of racist fans and nonwhite fans “obsessed with the subject”. so once again equating a racist reaction to a reaction to racism, and that’s not tolerable here

Coming into a thread where a black fan is expressing his discontent with the overwhelmingly
white state of a major homestuck project and claim that their fears and frustrations are a non-issue and that to simply express these concerns is "stirring the pot" is in of itself racist.
If you want to play in the space and believe the entire cast of homestuck is "white coded" despite the official claiming's of "araciality" (lol) go do that over there. What is gained by coming into a thread to say you never thought of the characters as anything other than white? Do you really think this is a unique perspective that adds anything to the discussion? That any black reader will see that and be struck with some revelation that homestuck WASN'T written as a story about 4 black kids on an adventure? This is about more than authorial intent, one of the main concerns here is with the fandom’s continued history of anti-black racism and how “canonizing” white voices for the main 4 characters of the story simply gives ammunition for racists looking to punch down.
