This is an AU I am working on called Sburb 1989, where instead of it being 2009, it's 198,9 and the kids play "Sburb: A Tabletop Adventure" in John's basement. In this AU, Sburb is just a D&D-esque game that they all play together after school. I wanted their fashion to also be reminiscent of that time period as well lol
Jade has big hair that's held together with lots of hairspray, and I made her kind of a geeky girl with a long skirt. Long skirts were really popular in the 80s for some reason!
Rose is a Trad Goth girl who also wears a long dress. A lot of goths would recycle clothing from older time periods, like bridal gowns, and I wanted to show that with her wearing a pretty old-looking dress. Frizzy hair was also pretty popular with goths, so instead of a bob, I thought it'd be cool if her hair looked sort of teased like that.
John is too normal-looking. Unfortunately, even in canon, he is already pretty 80s-coded, what with his obsession with Ghostbusters. So not much about his design has changed. The only thing I changed was giving him little braces like Jade lol.
Dave has a whole new outfit, obviously, so I had to think for a while about what he would wear in the 80s. So I just made him wear stuff that really popular rappers wore back then, plus the giant boombox lol I feel if he couldn't be a DJ or whatever, he would definitely be the kid in cartoons that carries one everywhere. The only real change was that his shades are square instead of a rounded oval. They reminded me of Stunner shades, which were really popular for rappers to wear then. He's only 13 in this AU, so I didn't give him a bunch of gold chains and stuff (where would a 13 year old get a chain from anyway lmao)
Sburb is non-magical in this AU so it is really just a board game lol.

@Lyrichartwell I did have a lot of ideas for this AU including for the trolls and stuff. It's basically going to be more of a Highschool AU then a Sburb AU!

Blueberry and I have been working on this fanadventure with a boardgame version of SBURB (though this one is magical, Jumanji style), so the concept is very attractive to me.

@Margot Kix Thanks I am glad you also like the idea lol it seems Sburb as a board game is really popular! Well, I only have the 4 kids drawn so far lol but I had ideas for each troll as well. How the AU works is that its more or less a "Breakfast Club" kind of AU where they are all outcasts for some reason and so they all play the game together after school because they're all they have to hang out with.
In this AU John and Jade are siblings/cousins (I can't decide yet but their families know about one another in this AU there is no separation at birth shenanigans happening here!) So they have always been friends since they were kids. John's dad is just a normal guy. And Jade lives with her Grandpa. They're both into geeky or nerdy things. Jade likes science and is a Grade A Student, while John's into movies like Ghostbusters. They don't have a lot of friends besides Dave and Rose since they're seen as "nerds" lol </3
Dave lives on the same block as John in an apartment that's not well known to have good upkeep, so they became friends since John likes to hang out with him and thinks his music is cool. Dave's lonely because there aren't many kids who think hip hop or rap are cool, so he hangs out with John anyways.
Rose is the one who lives kind of far away from the rest of them, and she's a Goth who's really into poetry and novels. She's a bit of a rule breaker and is always in detention for some reason either because she was late to school or because she skipped class. Her mom is a rich lady who used to be a hippie in her youth, which Rose despises because of how flowery and "fake" the aesthetic is.
The trolls are also in this AU! Basically the trolls are from an "Alternative" school that's geared toward "troubled youth", but it shut down recently due to budgetary cuts. So they all had to go to different districts and the 12 Beta trolls go to the humans school. They're not aliens in this AU, so it's Humanstuck all over the place. The Trolls have a reputation of being scary rule breakers and "freaks" because of rumors about the school they used to come from being entirely run by the student body or whatever, but they're not like that at all! The 12 trolls were one class that just transferred to this school, so they've known each other for years prior. They're not used to wearing their own clothes to school since the Alternative school had uniforms (lol this is how I can still have the "they all look the same" rule even though they're human) so they just continue to wear the old schools uniform. Vriska is a fan of the same board game John likes (Sburb) and has made her class play it before.
There's also other aspects too, like the Alpha kids are from a fancy Prep school that's in a nicer part of town, so they don't exactly have the same kind of school experience as the Beta kids. In this AU I am thinking they're all still related as well, like Jane is John's cousin, and Jake is Jade's cousin. This way it's still familial ties.
Calliope and Caliborn are homeschooled twins who go to the prep school but they cause trouble because Caliborn is still fucking evil in this universe and is basically a walking disaster waiting to happen. I like to think they were raised in different countries too which is why Calliope is British but Caliborn isn't </3 And people at the prep school think her accent is fake because her brother doesn't have one. T_T
