So why are we so staunchly defending Hussie?

I've been told many things as someone who hasn't been active in the fandom in almost a decade. Still I've witnessed the rises and falls of drama from afar, -some I still know shit about- including the many ways in which Hussie has behaved over the course of their presence on the internet, old and new.

Reading Gio's blog, people's account of the Hussie and the man, and things I've witnessed as a fan, I don't think the Gio is lying. As always when it comes to clashes that delve into legality but also beyond, those that probably go into Two Big Egos Territory (no man's land for all others involved), it's not impossible that some details are set as more grandiose than they are, but...

What bothers me, reading the forums, is the amount of people piling up on this Gio dude with claims I've looked into and found no proof about, except for like, minor stuff and comments that don't compare to Hussie's in the past. So if we going to do that we going to do it for both. Of course prove me wrong and I'll take it back. However I would also propose the notion, which I suspect Sound and Reasonable, that claims of bigotry shouldn't impact the fucked up-ness of using legal and manipulation tactics against projects such as the UHC.

People genuinely stay at Hussie's boots like they've not shown themselves to be a (sorry, but...) bad, narcissistic person, who hates their fanbase and things derived from it. And I'm not speaking out of my ass but from the behaviors I saw first hand while I read homestuck, as a teen, when the comic still updated. And while I still enjoyed the community from afar, learned of what people have told and shown me, both first and second hand accounts.

Hussie is not a stable person. They have over and over being Quite Shit, gone overboard, mistreated their fanbase, shown genuine dislike for their own work which would be OK if it wasn't because they've dragged others into it. Part of their work in both Homestuck and Psycholonials (this second one has been relied by clever, analytic people who've read it, I didn't go beyond the first chapter) seems to revolve around Fanbases, their relationships to it, from what feels like a very personal point of view.

It's ok to be attached to HS, god knows I sure am! But the amount of people thinking Hussie isn't capable of at least PART of what's said in the post are being too kind to a person like them. Like, seeing Social Media right now (not that I'm too active on Twitter or it's derivates, sorry), people are agreeing to have had terrible first hands experiences with Hussie. None of this surprises me. I'm rather surprised so many people defend him.

I'm going to, of course take what Gio says with a grain of salt, as we all must do with information given by involved parties, but I'm not giving Hussie the benefit of the doubt. He's gotten too much of it already- and betrayed his fanbase with it.

P.D: used they/them for hussie to differentiate. I'm not aware of their current pronouns or if they have even talked about it.

I agree. I've seen some very odd boot licking on this forum and it's kind of weird when you take everything into account.

i think theres a chasm of difference between "staunchly defending hussie" and "reluctant to take gio at his word regardless of who the post was about"

also play Psycholonials the ending is truly beautiful in what it says and also its where hussie first mentioned going with any/all pronouns

I mean, I don't know if I've seen that much defense of Andrew? I've mostly seen defense of the people who are getting caught in the crossfire and criticism of Gio's claims, which at least with my personal (limited) experience with Gio and from what I've seen, I definitely think should be taken critically.

I get into my experience here:

Re Autumn (no idea how to reply!)

Bit of a strong choice of words, yeah, mostly referring to people in many posts who seem very reluctant to consider the information. I know there's plenty of misinformation to go around on the internet, but I guess it does bother me, the amount of people for who it seems so difficult to see Hussie in a bad light, which I've seen often on The Net. Surprising to me, for the amount of times they've... eh. many much stuff.

Also english is not my first language and I figured "Staunchly" is a stronger word than I thought after I posted :D I sort of meant the refusal to see Hussie as someone in the wrong and stuff, to reiterate. Language barriers! Bad choices of words included.

I've been meaning to read Psycholonials but I'm obsessed with other (fandomless :[[[ ) media rn. I know it's very good. I saw until the end of the first act/chapter so I figure it's also Hussie levels of wild, which I will admit in their stories is quite quite fun.

Also thanks for the clarification w/ the pronouns.

Re Cami(again, no idea how to reply)

Feels terrible that people get caught in these crossfires (as I said, the No Man's Land!). I absolutely believe that information is being spinned and handpicked :/ that's inevitable in a way but it's always better to attempt to lessen the impact of bias instead of the opposite. Seems that hasn't been done.

What I mean by defense is that some people in the forums seem quite mad at the person for "starting drama" or seem to take what Gio said in bad faith and in favor of Hussie, a person who as a storyteller I adore but I've seen just. Not be great. And it bothers me.

Thanks for all the work with the FRAF teams, I hope you guys get a break soon.

As fans of Hussie's work (of which I am also a fan!), they have built up a reverence for Hussie in their own minds. To them Hussie is a sort of authority figure, so they're generally inclined to side with him on stuff like this. Not to mention the fact that most of these people have likely not even read the entire blogpost, which would explain why they have very little to say about its points (at least from what I've read. Cami can testify against this and she's no doubt a much more trustworthy source on this as they're obviously more active on this forum than I am).

Nor does barbed wire scar him.

Lenin walks around the world.
Black, brown, and white receive him.
Language is no barrier.
The strangest tongues believe him.

Lenin walks around the world.
The sun sets like a scar.
Between the darkness and the dawn
There rises a red star."

That's an understandable impression from the perspective of "Gio v.s. Hussie", but very few to no people are under the impression that Hussie has done nothing wrong -- they've done plenty wrong and it's all quite well known. The arguments against Gio's post aren't out of loyalty to Hussie, they're out of looking at Gio's words critically. His post is written in a very inflammatory way, and clearly is meant to present Gio, Hussie, and the whole situation in a specific and intentional way.

Some of his more... questionable choices in the post, along with the word of people who have Gio or knew him in the past, make him not come off as very trustworthy. That doesn't mean he's entirely wrong, or that Hussie hasn't done anything wrong in this situation, but it does mean it's not wise to take everything Gio says at face value.

Or, to put it shortly, Hussie having a long history of royally sucking does not make Gio trustworthy for accusing them of something new. It's entirely possible that "Gio is making false, stretched, or biased claims" and "Hussie did something stupid again" will both end up being true.

I’m as guilty of putting Hussie on a pedestal as the next guy, but I have to admit, having read through his archived blog posts along with the Formspring and Tumblr, that he has very often shown an adversarial if not hostile additive toward both his fans and others. The majority of the characters in Homestuck and Psycolonials are at least parodies of groups of people when they aren’t criticisms, often of his own fanbase. this makes for good content, both entertaining and sometimes thought provoking, but it’s clear that Hussie has never been the greatest person, and his relative reclusiveness and devotion to his work has mostly hidden it.

This is some straight up delirious biznasty, Dawg!!

Now (as in this decade) that Hussie is allowing others to write unofficially-official licensed work and is more receptive to collaboration, it makes it easier for fans of the new content *cough cough* to go easy on Hussie, since any criticism of Hussie would mean people working on HS now are complicit in some way (I don’t believe this, but I think this is the general assumption.) It’s also easy to say “go easy on Hussie” when they haven’t posted anything inflammatory or literally insane publicly in a while. It’s like everyone forgets about Hussie‘s shitty tendencies now that they aren’t the face of the franchise anymore.

Eh? What I've seen is: 24 hours straight of everyone dogpiling on Evil Hussie and Gio being held up as some utterly blameless paragon of journalistic integrity. Followed by a growing stream of people going "uh, the more I look into this, Gio seems shady as shit."
