"The Backmoons" - a grey space between reality and dreaming in Homestuck: Beyond Canon

Dirk and Jane, same-minded as they are, both use moon-bases as symbols of their authority. (Dirk, big-headed as he is, made a slightly larger-scale gesture.)

In the case of Jane's lunar manor, this moon seems to operate as a gateway to the mysterious Fanontinuum. Even the manor itself is subject to some kind of odd spatial warping: Crowbar opines that "[the] place is bigger than you remember" as he struggles to navigate its labyrinthine halls. Perhaps, like the halls of the Home representing Homestuck itself - which, in Allie's words, is "plagued with an ever-expanding amalgamation of wings, and rooms, and atriums, and winding exhibition halls" - it is growing, suggesting a mysterious link between the two locales?

What's especially intriguing is the possibility that Dirk's moon base has become subject to this same phenomenon:

It’s got the old lab, bits of the Theseus, winding labyrinthian halls... when you’ve got an entire moon to work with, real estate is no object. There are chambers in here even I don’t remember putting in.

Homestuck has always used the moon as a symbol of dreaming (i.e. on the uniforms of the dreamers themselves), and dreams have become a heavy motif weighing upon Act 2 of Beyond Canon so far. The Fanontinuum specifically flirts with the dreamlike imagery of Twin Peaks' Black Lodge, and it's hard not to find parallels to other works within a similarly 'liminal' oeuvre - Dirk's invocation of labyrinths and the ancient hero Theseus (who slew the legendary minotaur), in particular, naturally bring to mind the extradimensional space that is central to Danielewski's House of Leaves. (The satyr Bobo's place of residence resembles yet another Labyrinth - the titular locale from the David Bowie film, itself inspired by the space-bending works of M. C. Escher, his famous Relativity in particular.)

The bringing of Dirk's moon into the Shurb session during Ly'lac's entry suggests we're far from done with this mysterious superstructure. So what exactly is going on, here?
