I want to play the games after Reach but Halo 5 isn't on PC so I guess I never will

yeah, idk why 343 never bothered to port over halo 5 to PC. Just seems like a missed opportunity to actually be able to play through all the halo games in order without having to get a xbox.

Static recompilation is quickly becoming a popular alternative to emulation when it comes to bringing console games to PC, so maybe someone will do something with that eventually. Not any time soon to be clear, the fact that they did a 360 game with Sonic Unleashed is still a feat of miraculous technical wizardry, but it's possible that in the longrun, this is what preservation will look like.

I did a playthrough of the Master Chief Collection with my old highschool buddies last year. Still really good -- except for Halo 4, which is still really bad.

I wish I could do that. My normal friend group from high school consists of five people, one over the normal limit.

There exists the AlphaRing mod for PC that allows local co-op and still functions online, but it's cumbersome to connect four players where one would, I guess, just be using parsec into their partner's game or something. And even then, we couldn't do Halo 1 since that never had more than 2-player co-op to begin with, meaning AlphaRing only boosts it to four.

I did play through the Bungie trilogy with my dad though, before AlphaRing was even out and you had to rely on nexus co-op. Even with the technical bugs it was probably the least-stressful interaction we'd had in years.
