i can't be the only one who thinks homestuck won't work as well as an animated show, right? don't get me wrong, i'm very excited for this project and it looks pretty cool so far, but so much of homestuck is based around the fact that it's a webcomic? and some things won't translate very well into this medium. it'll still be an amazing story, it just won't be the same experience, you know? gosh, i feel like a sweaty middle-aged basement dweller complaining about marvel movies here, but i just had to dump these thoughts somewhere.
adaptation is always inherently flawed if your goal is to directly recreate an experience, but i do think a purely animated medium could bring with it some new and interesting possibilities
the epilogues are the best part of homestuck
honestly my main concern is theres going to be a anime/manga debate happening and thats going to cause divide which we do not need right now - but on the bright side theres really only two good paths in my eyes:
if its shit, we laugh - if its good, we cheer. win win?
Personally I think a lot of the jokes just won't work because you can't experience them as a flash animation lol, but from the trailer it seems like they're speedrunning a lot of the story because this is a very big comic so they have to introduce the most popular characters right off the bat. Because it's a story told through chatlogs as well where the characters goof off most of the time, they can get pretty creative with the way the characters interact with each other.
I specifically liked this part of the trailer lol like Dave is literally popping out of the screen to turn John's head. I think they'll do more of this so it's obvious the characters are interacting via text.
And the literal use of the Strife Specibus is also neat it shows they didn't just scrap parts that would be too 'hard' to explain in an animated medium lol.
the best case scenario is that they use the advantages of the medium to show things from different angles like this, though it will never be the same as the original. that said I fear what they may cut out to change the pacing. obviously the pacing of the comic is unadaptable.
This is some straight up delirious biznasty, Dawg!!
I was gonna make a reply more about what I would like most for handling the adaptation but now I’m just wondering how SBaHJ will be handled.
That's it, I'm gonna do what I should have done a long time ago.
I'm going to beat him to death with this hammer.

i think it'd actually be like, incredibly homestuck if its adaptation into a new medium like this was notably different than the webcomic, which utilizes all of the tools of its medium to the fullest.
All-tempting draught. We'll drink of her again.
Shits about to go so fire when Dave spends 40 minutes explaining what a captchalogue, modus, strife specibus, and how sburb works
tbh yeah. i hope they get really creative with it instead of trying to make it as close to the original as possible
I think at the end of the day the series will atleast be average, what worries me is Homestuck being talked about like this again, we're gonna see 10 year old girls with HS merch, we're gonna see shipping fights and community discourse never previously seen, they'll be fights of HS webcomic fans vs HS animated fans and it's all gonna be brain rotting to witness
I think the assumption that this is going to be inherently popular is kinda flawed. I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if we only get a pilot and no continuation because it just doesn't have the traction homestuck used to.
a lot of Homestuck is worthless fluff, a lot of Homestuck is stuff that can be explained clearly in 2 minutes, a lot of Homestuck is LOST in its medium. It being animated means longer and more dynamic fights and more onscreen fights in general, less time spent on endlessly wordy dialogue and more time spent on substantial, consistent, and easily discernible character development. And speaking of, that means abrupt conflicts (like Murderstuck) can have more focus on the lead up to them and thus more impact, AND THUS may be received more fondly.
Don't get me wrong, Homestuck's strengths are its wordy dialogue and slowburn character development. A lot of what people like about Homestuck is that there is SO MUCH to read and learn about. Even if not all of it amounts to anything. Like learning all this stuff about Nepeta only for her to really contribute nothing and then die.
But Homestuck's weaknesses are what is easily addressed with an animated adaptation. There's SO MUCH you can do with animation that Homestuck cannot accomplish.
Hell, you don't even have to necessarily cut down most of the wordy dialogue. It can still be in there, just paired with the characters progressing the plot. Pesterchum conversations can be done over the course of entire episodes of John and the crew fighting monsters, learning alchemization, exploring their lands, etc.
I think its worth giving a chance.
im interested in seeing what theyve done and what the plan would be if greenlit because yeah adaptation is weird and can go in so many different ways especially for something thats so tied to its specific medium (consider the non-ds versions of The World Ends With You and how awkward the adjustments were to make it make sense on a single screen)
but also i am not entirely confident it would get greenlit for a variety of factors (popularity (as mentioned), the nature of the content, the length of the source material, the reputation of the source material, etc). i think if the pilot is good i would hope it would be greenlit, and i do like the little bit we get to see.. but... i dunno man i dunno
theres been a lot of truly truly incredible animated shows that never get past the pilot ep its really just a dice roll
Nah this will be popular, the combined motion of vivzie fans, people hate watching it, actual Homestuck fans, and deltarune fans will get people talking. It's not JUST HS fans that are gonna watch
im optimistic. at its very worst, i think it will just be Okay

I really hope this gets popular, I'm excited for the pilot, but so many of the things i so desperately want to see animated (Murderstuck, Everything Surrounding Unite Synchronization, Act 6 Act 5.) are much later than the pilot, so i really hope that the pilot gets picked up by somebody.
Hiya. Just a random question, but you know what a majority vote is?
Yeah I mean one of the most notorious criticisms of homestuck is that act 1 is slow and uninteresting (I disagree with that but yknow) so I do wonder how they will change things for an animated format.
i think itl/l most likely be fine [if it ends up get/ting made], but i do fe/el like taking aw/vay the chats and such takes aw/vay from some real/ly great subtle characterization. one of my favourite smal/l details is how/v vriska starts using more '8's in her w/vords w/vhen she gets upset, w/vhich had [to me] led to some real/ly co/ol and revelatory character moments. the w/vebcomic format just fe/els so ingrained in how/v the story is told and how/v dif/ferent ideas are expres/sed that i cant imagine how/v an adaptation could capture that same vibe. like, how/v could an animated show/v capture the fe/eling of literal/ly going back to previous pages to input pas/sw/vords and stuf/f?? homestuck incorporated its medium into the actual storytel/ling so w/vel/l and so often that any adaptation w/vil/l by neces/sity ne/ed to make sacrifices in that area. that being said, i have hope! i think if proper thought is put into it, it could be an interesting exploration of the story from another angle through the various strengths of the media its being adapted into. i w/vil/l mis/s typing quirks though
i post from a dark scary ro/om like from house of leaves
To be honest i doubt the pilot will be an actual pitch for a new animated adaptation and just more of a fun, fanservice-y celebration thing. from the trailer it seems like its adapting all of act 1 and 2, as well as touching on act 3 and later, which is way too breakneck for any kind of actual adaptation. also, i imagine toby fox and vivziepop are insanely busy with their own projects (idk for sure, i dont really follow vivziepop at all), and i don't think they'd be willing to take something as long and daunting as a homestuck adaptation under their wing right now. even if it does get adapted, we're probably not seeing it again for a long time.
I can't wait to watch the 3 hour explanation of Troll Romance.
