Hi. I am a new user here on the FRAF website, and I thought I would put out my own thoughts on the animated pilot as well as what I hope for the future. I will preface this with a sorry if this topic has been discussed much. Sorry... But also be aware that I followed the
1. I heard that Toby Fox was in the pilot.
2. Watched the pilot.
3. Read Homestuck.
4. Rewatched the pilot.
I'll start with the good: the pilot was animated very well. I don't expect much less from Spindleroo and/or Spindlehorse. The fight scene between John and his father was very well animated.
I also enjoyed the idea that the kids call each other instead of chat logs, as it then allows for more free-flowing conversations, moving from the webcomic medium to a series. I liked how Dave and John kinda bounced around the screen with each other.
The music sounded pretty good as well! I liked how it plays behind the characters to show who is on screen and such. John, voiced by Toby Fox, was great. Rose's voice actor did a really good job, and the same with Jade! Dave did a good job, but... I'll get to that later...
Now, I will get into things that I hope will change for the future.
Dave's voice actor is great for the character; however, the way that the voice actor portrayed Dave was not good. At all. I'll start with the obvious. Dave is a cool guy and very macho, but in a white boy way? If you get what I mean. Dave shouldn't be showing this much emotion. Throughout the comic, he doesn't smile much. He is "nonchalant." How would I fix this? Simple. Tone down the emotion to a minimum but not a lot, to make him a boring-sounding character.
The pacing of the pilot is something I will keep brief. I understand that it is 11 minutes, and if we end up with a show, 30 min episodes would be nice. I understand that they needed to cram enough to make it to some fight scene, especially with John. So, if we end up with a show, 30-minute episodes would be nice, and it would not be so fast that I have to pause to understand what is going on.
Other than that, I don't have much to say on the pilot. A lot of people have a similar opinion, and I wanted to share mine. I have hopes for this series as I really like Homestuck! I've read Homestuck, the Epilogues, HSBC, and currently going through the games. Hiveswap has been fun. I wanna hear some of the opinions from this site, so please share! (And sorry again if this topic is talked about a lot)
