I’ve noticed that there’s a lot of transphobia within homestuck and post canon.
Within the bounds of the original comic run, one thing that I notice immediately is March Eridan. They decided to present the racist eugenicist as a femboy. Femboys for those not familiar are people who appropriate the aesthetics of transfeminity in an easily palatable way for a bigoted audience.
There is the greater issue of post canon Jade. Let me start off by saying within the epilogue Hussie decided to give Jade a dog penis. This is shown to immediately affect her behavior, a transphobic thing on its face pointing towards ideas of bio essentialism. The behavior changes made are transmisogynistic, especially given how much they diverge from her original character. She becomes aggressive both sexually and physically, shown to attack and act predatory to gay men. Her hypersexuality is also playing to a bigoted idea of a trans woman. That’s not to mention the fact that polyamory is shown in two instances, and both are clearly just cheating.
This issue continues in homestuck two. Jade is routinely called a bad mother, and her cis mother is forced to step in. She’s shown as a cheater who wants a child as an object to prove she can be a mother. The worst example is that they decided to depict her as a soyjak, a bigoted form of meme meant to show people right wing users don’t like as “soy boys.” This is often used to make trans suicide jokes as well. Not only is she shown as this, she’s given facial hair as well.
Then there’s the issue of June. She was introduced in one slide in beyond canon. Then subsequently in the same update they decided to call John a pedophile. Now finally, I move on to the harder to prove. Roxy in the original homestuck comic is depicted as transfem and was commonly seen as such in the fandom at the time. This is mostly rooted in stereotypes, and the fact her name plate is chromosomal. However, it was the popular headcanon at the time.
What the epilogues decided to do was make sure every character was confirmed as cis by forcing them to have children in order to erase trans interpretations. Then, Roxy who was broadly seen as transfem was made into a trans man. It’s hard to see this as anything but spite for the fans. If that is too tenuous, which I understand. There’s the fact that candy Roxy detransition and frames being trans as a choice chose not to make because she had a baby and her gender troubles were fixed.
Finally there’s psycholonials. The gender pyramid refers to nonbinary identity as clown like and then states caring about your gender is equally stupid. Caring about your gender is described as horse gender and ascribed to Rowling a known transphobe. It’s clear from this that Hussie doesn’t respect trans people.
Each individual aspect might not seem compelling but when taken in connection, it paints a clear picture.
"Femboys for those not familiar are people who appropriate the aesthetics of transfeminity in an easily palatable way for a bigoted audience. "
Not reading your fucking post, you are immediately throwing an entire category of people under the bus. You can talk about your personal feelings or experiences with types of people, but strongly making claims like this, as you have with drag, as you have with clowngender, makes me not trust you. Reporting this post.
so much of what you mention wasnt even written by hussie and/or are bad faith readings that were popularized as fanon and do not exist within the actual text of the work
psycholonials is good and has a beautiful, powerful message but if the gender pyramid is what you get stuck on your loss.
my gender is dragon btw i feel like thats important context if we are to discuss the legitimacy of Quirky nb identities
To quote a good friend of mine, they could fill a library with the things you don't know.
And a second one with the things you think you do.

this is just an actively inflammatory thread LOL its clear you don't want to actually discuss these topics in a serious way and only want to win an internet argument you made up in your head, all buzzwords related to things you don't even really care about. there's no thought put into this at all. try again in the next life asswipe
All of the other general bullshit aside, "Femboys for those not familiar" is an absolute banger of a line to include in a post trying to be taken seriously, assuming that is your intent, which it almost certainly is not.
Ah, these so-called... femme boys, you called them? No, I cannot say I've heard of such individuals! Prithee, do enlighten me on this topic!

I don't think I necessarily agree that the clowngender stuff in psycholonials is mocking of nonbinary identities. To me it reads like a semi-earnest (as earnest as any of Hussie's works get really) exploration of what it might look like to express the idea of gender beyond a linear scale from 'man' to 'woman.' It's pretty undeniably a flawed expression in several ways, especially in that is makes some assumptions about nonbinary people that simply don't pan out as smoothly as such a strictly definitional expression would need them to, but I don't think it comes off as, like, dishonest.
We also kind of can't know how much Hussie was aware of those flaws while writing. At the end of the day, it's a crafted story, and things like that could always either be unintentional biases by the author or intentional flaws indicative of flaws in a character, and it's very difficult to draw a distinction between the two without personally knowing the author.
I do think it's worth talking about these things, and the pattern that can be seen when viewing them all together is certainly notable. I just always feel it's worth remembering that it's not absolute.
At the end of the day, my feelings on the matter in regards to Hussie specifically is just that I don't know what's going on in their head, especially given the wide timeframe this all took place over. Nobody stays the same person over a decade, after all.
hey folks, fyi ananke was banned for some comments made in a different thread, but we're leaving this up in case trans people want to have an actual discussion about the actual text of the comic in a non-ragebait format. we know some of yall were concerned (we've seen your reports, don't worry!), we just wanted to let yall know.
Thank you for the notice! I honestly hope someone else makes a different thread discussing this topic, as I don't think anything in the OP post is really worthy of discussion, and I'd rather not have this discussion in a thread where bigotry will be pinned at the top of it as the OP. Just my personal take.
to me, as a trans woman im just saying
i am only saying... if the closest thing we have to a canon trans female in homestuck rn is eridan crossdressing in a dream bubble 8bit sprite, then i don't think it's a stretch to say that us trans women have been failed in terms of representation in homestuck canon.
and the vriska pesterlog route and the small nod to june in hs2 as of right now doesn't cut close to trans women being represented and given actual agency as a character.
Yeah, I agree with lyric, it sets a bit of a poor tone for the thread.
if theres a way to snip the first post of a thread without deleting the whole thing thatd be cool and nice but i dont think thats been a thing in any forum ive been on outside of like. a mod just going in and editing it
@Blueberry Lunascratch i think that's a super fair point! if you (or anyone else!!) wanted to make their own thread, we can absolutely lock this one so folks may discuss this elsewhere !
Understood! I... likely won't be doing it myself bc, I don't think there's much discussion to be had on this topic lol. But yeah hope someone else does if they wanna
@lyrichartwell +1'ing that, someone else make one with no bigoted rage-baity shit at the top. I guess maybe I could?? This will probably be a temporary account; so, I could just be like "Transphobia in Homestuck, how are we feeling?" and dip and be mostly okay? idk i don't know how to word it gracefully. Dealing with acid relfux and kinda only half awake right now.
Talking as a genderqueer person since forever, and general queer activist person since over a decade.
This (sadly disappointing) thread starts out with an incredibly inflamatory, gender-policing and ill-informed message, and I don't think it's a good opening for complex conversations on delicate, personal and often painful matters. I understand the intent of the mods but I'd rather prefer this topic to be gone.
A lot of people would have things to say about queer themes (and flaws regarding queer themes) in Hussie's works, but not as a follow-up to this opening post.
