Nows a good time prior to Sahcon to build yourself a homestuck troll in vroid studio.
https://vroid.com/en/studio
(and i personally use it from steam)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1486350/VRoid_Studio_v230/
You can export these models directly into vrchat and blender, there are good tutorials if you want to make modifications to your model in blender, but exporting as an .xavatar and importing with the xwear manager sets up almost everything for you (this is what i'm personally doing for my troll!)
https://vroid.pixiv.help/hc/en-us/articles/38728373457561-Using-a-model-in-VRChat
heres a tutorial if you'd rather take the blender route:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIEpCN4na9I (older, probably still useful!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qbwl9XIONuQ (older, has more advanced things)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPXe0a_yMQc (seems recent, skimmed through it)
A lot of people model out their horns with the hair editor (3d splines!), Icetal's horns are modelled out in blender (also with 3d splines).
heres a horn tutorial for blender I really liked:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BXvwqVyCQw
I can't help with texturing (you'll need to learn about model seams!), to export it into xwear accessory, i had to pull it into unity, I followed this tutorial from pixiv to import it, not a particularly painful process.
https://vroid.pixiv.help/hc/en-us/articles/38730429718041-How-do-I-make-a-VRChat-costume-or-accessory-compatible-with-the-dress-up-feature-XWear-conversion
heres a link of assets I've made, including raw krita files (a lot of them are vector files, so you might need to export them manually from krita if you want to use another program!) which will hopefully help you get started:

I'll probably be blogging updates regarding vroid modeling my own OCs, I'll also try and be available to help anyone who wants to make a model!
This seems really interesting
a while back i tried to model my sona in blender but gave up fairly quickly, ill check this out to see if its easier to use and how in depth it goes
"Ok, but your teen years will be ruined just because you didn't buy an egg."
it seems there are no options for chubby and plus sized characters. i shall go back to blender.

I lightly referenced this video on my chubby model work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xv7sxvjy2k8
there are tricks (use a bodysuit to hide the body)
and you CAN use the model as a starting point for a chubby model in blender. I will say for me personally I found i could get the width but not the tummy. I'm away from my computer but I'll share my wip of my friend's fantroll a bit later.
huh, i did think of using something to cover the main body but didnt think itd be possible
thank you, ill check that out
"Ok, but your teen years will be ruined just because you didn't buy an egg."
Oh hey, Vroid is pretty fun to mess around in! I've made a few characters myself in there (most aren't Homestuck related) but I did make a stylized Nepeta once.
Ive been following the tutorial for chubby character and it worked really well! now my question is if its possible to put clothes over it or if i have to draw over the bodysuit?
"Ok, but your teen years will be ruined just because you didn't buy an egg."
This OC belongs to my friend Ash, who as a primarily nsfw artist I don't believe I can link to. Keep in mind this is a work in progress, the hair is just default for right now, the rest of the face is done. the skin needs a second pass (i used a splatter texture to lay out places for freckles, then I manually filled them in), the two layer top and gloves are simply place holders. I have not gotten around modeling the horns. > Ive been following the tutorial for chubby character and it worked really well! now my question is if its possible to put clothes over it or if i have to draw over the bodysuit?
To prevent clipping you can erase portions of the bodysuit, i do almost all of my texture work outside of vroid but for erasing masks and clipping parts i just do it within vroid (on the top right, next to brush color there is a mirror tool which makes this easier). Parts of the bodysuit clipped in vroid so i erased it (I also slightly decreased it in size, which annoys me). The legging textured is painted on as a separate layer, but as part of the skin bodysuit. The shorts are a separate bodysuit slightly wider than the base bodysuit, the sweater is a default hoodie texture.
within vroid i laid out some templates so i know how far i can go with different outfits, for the undershirt i'm going to need to do some specific things to avoid clipping. Ultimately you're going to need to experiment to figure out what will work correctly.

that nepeta is super cute! did you upload her to VRChat? I feel like I've seen her before last sahcon (granted, there are a LOT of nepeta models!)
this is a sign sent down from the heavens....... i must vroid more............

so the idea is to make each piece of clothing a different bodysuit and texture them individually? are there any masks for the textures so i can work with them in another app?

> so the idea is to make each piece of clothing a different bodysuit and texture them individually?
you can do that if you'd like, i would experiment with the various templates and see what works/doesn't work, they all have various sliders to fit different effects. Erasing portions of the bodysuit would let some clothing fit when it would otherwise clip. Assuming your avatar is your fantroll, you will probably would want a bodysuit for your top (for the tight fit), for example. but you might want a skirt for your OC! You so you the skirt templates in the bottom section, or even the long coat in the top section or dresses in the dress section. They all have different editable parameters and degrees of customization, the chubby bodysuit might require some creativity on how to make it work. (i.e. you'll need to Experiment).> are there any masks for the textures so i can work with them in another app?
if you right click a layer and click "export guide", it'll make a give you the mask for that specific template. You can then bring it back into vroid by either hitting the image icon next to the plus sign or by right clicking a layer and hitting "import".> this is a sign sent down from the heavens....... i must vroid more............
i really want to see some fantrolls in Sahcon's VRChat meetup! There are a lot of canon characters but it's really cool to see things people made from scratch, esp when its relatively accessible if you can already draw. So yes, you should vroid more.
hmmmmm i see
i tried using skirts but they didnt have a slider to fit the waist so i kinda gave up on that
i didnt think of using dresses and coats instead, ill try later

oh i see, tysm!
"Ok, but your teen years will be ruined just because you didn't buy an egg."
after three days of work this is what i got
im not sure about the eyes tho

> after three days of work this is what i got
oh cool i'm glad I could help! i now consider this thread a success since i got someone to make a vroid of their fantroll.
> im not sure about the eyes tho
it took multiple attempts for me to get to where i am currently, including an entire outfit redesign (in short, the seifuku was designed as a common outfit so i could minimize time and do multiple models; i also thought it fit the vr chat community. i ultimately stalled out and when i brought her into VRChat I realized I didn't like how it colored perception of the character (and it wasn't a good read on the VRChat community anyways). You can always change the model later.
i ended up using the eye graphics you sent in the opening message and it looked much better
rn im trying to port the model to vrchat to see how it looks
"Ok, but your teen years will be ruined just because you didn't buy an egg."
it works as intended in vrchat, but the eye movement is reversed? like looking up the eyes move down etc
looking online it seems to be a common problem and the only solution i found was to check the eye bones, but i cant seem to find them in unity and .vrm files dont open in blender
"Ok, but your teen years will be ruined just because you didn't buy an egg."
to be clear, i've not had this problem! but i have toyed around in blender for my models (primarily to make xwear stuff)> looking online it seems to be a common problem and the only solution i found was to check the eye bones, but i cant seem to find them in unity and .vrm files dont open in blender=
two (threeFOUR even) different answers to this:
1. https://github.com/absolute-quantum/cats-blender-plugin is what a lot of people use when working on vroid plugins (esp ones with video tutorials!!), but it only works on an older version of blender. You're going to be able to find the most tutorials for this!
2. https://cats.neoneko.xyz/ provides a version that's more up to date! but it lacks a "Fix model" button and i've not found a youtube tutorial using it.
3. https://toolkit.neoneko.xyz/ the new cats team (the reason there is an updated version from a different team is that old maintainer disappeared) seems to have developed a new tool, i have literally learned about it as of writing this post and I know nothing about it.
4. https://vrm-addon-for-blender.info/en/ is the most basic one and what i'd use if i were making a .vrm model entirely from scratch. *AS FAR AS I KNOW* you need this installed regardless. It'll do imports & exports and might be enough to just flip the eye models around.
Doing work on a friend's OC. I have two other Vroid models I also want to tackle in varying states of completion (a jade Harley and my OC Canina Awooie). I wanted to finish this model first tho since it was supposed to be an art fight attack (lol).
Just finished her Sweater.
I've done:
- face (eyes, eyebrows, eyeliner, eyebags, hand dotted freckles)
- expressions
- sweater
- leggings
- body proportions
I need to do:
- hair
- horns
- teeth (if possible)
- undershirt
- short shorts
- gloves
- shoes
- skin (needs a second pass with hand drawn freckles instead of a splatter brush)
This isn't in a particular order (probably doing short shorts next followed by the under shirt, since the short shorts are easy and the undershirt finishes the "top". Might do shoes and or gloves after that. Skin comes after all the clothes, horns and teeth comes after hair.)
Finished with Cimble for @currentlyTRash on bsky! (nsfw profile so no link)
i'm very happy overall with how she turned out! i added a little dark portion between the two cylinders of her right horn so that it implies the two parts are not fully connected (it's like the end of a pen!)
first off:
https://www.deviantart.com/ylimegirl/art/Extended-Zodiac-Vectors-All-signs-721467417 this is an amazing resource for anyone who does fantroll stuff and has a troll with an extended zodiac sign. I love vectors sm.
working through one of my own OCs, Canina Awooie. the final piece will have a matcap on both the bike shorts and undershirt so pay no heed to the fact the shirt above is the exact same color as the undershirt. I painted the taurmini symbol with a stencil using blender's texture paint. I had to do this because the breasts deform the texture. it's not super hard but it was intimidating doing it the first time and the precision is very eyeballed, looking into better alternative for "projecting" the texture onto the shirt. Heres a video for how I did this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmeC5CAP4Sg
Just finished her shorts. I'm moving onto shoes and then revisiting her shirt (not sold on the design) before revisiting her hair & face a bit closer. Really happy with how they came out!
