i believe AH used Photoshop for it, much like they used photoshop for almost everything MSPA (aside from flashes)

which version of photoshop hussie used i have no idea but i think any version would work

i also think hussie made a mini-guide to SBAHJ somewhere on their old formspring or maybe tumblr i can't remember you might wanna look through the Unofficial Homestuck Collection (not recommended)

there's a browser-based free clone of photoshop called "photopea", that has all the same functionalities :] you could probably figure out how to imitate the SBAHJ style in any part program though, it just might be a little trickier

Yeah you can use pretty much any art program that has an aliased pen to have the pixelled edges on the pen tool

Ive heard rumors that hussie used mspaint for sbahj, but I think its more likely xe used photoshop.

i'm not suggesting anything, but if i wanted to use photoshop (i don't, mostly cause i use paintnet for everything) i would go the seadwellers' route (or just use photopea but where's the fun in that)

it really comes down to using photoshop as poorly as possible. filling things with the bucket tool, resizing images to create typically unwanted artifacts... a lot of stuff under the
"Image>Adjustments" menu is very useful. also very useful are things under the "Filters" menu, sharpen especially is good at creating crust. a tip hussie posted somewhere was saving an image as a low quality jpeg, screencapping the preview, then reinserting that into the piece. it's very fun, i recommend it. there's no pressure, because you're really just fucking around with how bad you can make something look

krita is also a good option, it's free and can probably do everything you need, it also has a jpeg artifact filter for instant shittyness (Filter -> Start G'MIC-Qt -> it's in the Degradations category or you can search for it directly)
