On some real talk does anyone know of some good resources for learning tagalog? im at a pretty nice point where i both am gonna have a bunch of spare time just lying around AND i have a decent amount of spare change too so i thought it'd be cool to try and pick the language up (especially cuz im like filipino and shit and i think i gotta learn da language for real). also my grandparents would prolly think it's cool

I recommend talking to Filipinos, or watch some funny Filipino movies!! I'm not familiar with any apps that would help in learning tagalog, especially how we use a lot of english words now.

a tale as old as time 🥲

i made a very good investment buying prof. john wolff's books on cebuano (i am visayan, not filipino) so i'd expect his material on tagalog/pilipino to be of similar quality. it's also very easy to immerse oneself in tagalog-language media through e.g. the radio (on either the radio garden app or an actual radio), tv (on youtube and facebook), et cetera.

i personally would worry more about vocabulary over grammar if i were you -- people online like to tout some aspects of the grammar (e.g. verb conjugations) as being incredibly complicated to wrap one's head around but in truth it's quite intuitive once one understands austronesian alignment/symmetrical voice, a morphosyntactic alignment particular to our philippine languages.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about vocabulary too much, especially the super deep tagalog words. Filipino nowadays, as I've observed, don't really use it and would just opt to english. That is if you wanna just learn Tagalog informally/casually.

I am no pro at tagalog and I'm the type of Filipino who gets asked if I wasn't born in the ph.

Icic.. i read the little blurb on john wolff's book and it sounds right up my alley. I might see if they got it at my library (or just buy it online)

re: anomaletix

other than watching movies and shows try also going on filipino side of social media like in tiktok. or facebook and join filipino meme facebook groups because yes that's what people here still mostly use. and just look at the memes or viral posts and whatever and the comment sections. most people speak taglish and you can learn the slang easily too

glad to hear they're what you're looking for! if you're thinking of buying consider buying them from cornell university press https://www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book-listing/?q=Pilipino+through+Self-Instruction; they're $34/e.
