I've noticed a lot of posts on here focus on a specific media, but I'm a huuuge cinephile and I would really love to hear about films you all have recently seen, whether they're new or not, and maybe get some recommendations to add to my watchlist.

Some recent-ish movies I really enjoyed were Castration Movie I and Together, the latter of which I saw in theaters. Other favorites of mine I rewatch from time to time are Perfect Blue and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, if that gives you any idea of the stuff I like.

I watched the 2025 Superman a week ago and Jurassic World Rebirth. 2025 Superman was like, the best superhero movie that I've seen in a long time (which, admittedly, isn't that impressive because I stopped really engaging with the MCU post Avengers: Infinity Way) and Jurassic World Rebirth was like. Fine I guess. I watched it mainly because I think Jonathan Bailey is kind of a heartthrob.

Oh, damn, I'm sorry, I must've missed that. Sorry to steal your topic.

Re: yanopi

A couple of my family members went to see the James Gunn Superman recently and said it was really good as well, though I'm not too keen on superhero movies since I agree they've been on a pretty damn harsh decline for a good while now. I saw Fantastic Four the other day and it was. So painfully average I was just miserable and it felt like a complete waste of my time. Seems like Superman was not that bad though.

honestly i liked fantastic four more in many regards. it was still painfully average but i just loathe how vfx shots are framed in superman. the colour grading is absolutely heinous too

i think coolsville superman sucks!!! hey, waitaminnit... wasn't that quote from a james gunn movie? DAMN YOU, JIMMY!!!

no but actually i thought superman was a stinker. it was pretty rich of gunn to talk up superman as an immigrant story in the lead-up to the film's release, only for the actual message to be "you are only as good as you can assimilate human (i.e. american) values". some immigrant story, james! and then in the aftermath, gunn would express confusion that people thought superman was "woke". well, i appreciate the honesty there, man, but i wish you were honest before the film came out so i didn't have to sit there in the theatre feeling all disappointed.

i also thought it was derivative of the last fifty years or so of superman films, where superman is presented as sort of throwback to a simpler time. in superman '78 he was a throwback to the pre-watergate days, in returns a throwback to the pre-9/11 days, in man of steel a throwback to the pre-war-on-terror days. alternatively, each movie is trying to pull off a "what if superman was real?" gambit that kind of falls flat for me. it's doubly-derivative when you recall how much gunn was leaning into the '78 iconography for the branding (re-using elements for the poster, the title cards, the score, etc.).

this is the comic fan in me talking, but if you wanted to do a "what if superman was real?" movie for reals, you gotta go back to the golden age superman. the guy who stopped wrongful executions, beat up wifebeaters, tore down slums so they'd be rebuilt, stopped orphanages from abusing kids, spooked corrupt senators, helped guys win their football games, ran from place to place to place helping people in a whirlwhind of humanitarian wish-fulfillment. of course, this will never happen as long as james gunn is leading the charge (and as long as tom king is nearby to meddle).

anyways, i'll cap it off with a relevant quote (recall the shuster estate filed a lawsuit against WB): "I, Jerry Siegel, the co-originator of Superman, put a curse on the Superman movie! I hope it super-bombs. I hope loyal Superman fans stay away from it in droves. I hope the whole world, becoming aware of the stench that surrounds Superman, will avoid the movie like a plague."

Re: Deacon

Man that's fucking bleak, and really disappointing. People keep talking up how good it is but I guess the bar for "good superhero movie" must be beneath the floor at this point. I hope you enjoy whichever movie you manage to catch, come back here if Weapons lives up to the hype.

Hi everyone I watched Kotoko yesterday, expecting it to be a straightforward horror film. Oh boy it was not. It was probably one of the hardest film watches I have ever had to sit through but Christ I am so glad I did because it's such a great fucking movie. I don't know if anyone else in here has seen it but I think I came out of that 90 minutes a completely new man. The directing style paired so perfectly with the subject matter... It didn't feel like there was much of a story to it but I honestly didn't need there to be, I was so invested in the reality it presented and the life of the woman it follows. If anyone plans on looking into it I highly recommend reading up on some trigger warnings because there are a couple shots in particular that I wasn't expecting that got to me but if you can stomach it it's such a fuckin' experience, in the best possible way.

fulfilling my obligation to update the thread on weapons: i saw weapons! and i liked it. it made me remember george lucas' notion that the most important parts of a film are the first 5 minutes and the last 20. the first 5 minutes were electric and the last 20 were good too (very cathartic, you see cregger's WKUK side come out). but man, those first five minutes... the image of the kids running out into the night is so strong, and cregger milks it for all its worth. watching those motion-detected lights come on as they ran past... just brilliant, man.

I got to see Weapons yesterday, and holy shit people were not fucking exaggerating about it. That was probably one of the best recent horror movies I've ever gotten to see. The theater I saw it with just made it so much better, and I wish more theaters were as energetic and into the film as this one was, because everyone was having such a blast with the movie it improved my whole experience by an indescribable amount.

I do definitely agree with what people have been saying about the whole movie being basically just a set-up for a really big punchline at the end, and my fucking God did it deliver on every part of it.
