Too often, the discussion around June Egbert has become about whether or not she is canon (she is), so I'm making this topic for people to just discuss her as a character, to post their meta or analysis, what have you.

"Without love, it cannot be seen."

I really like the way the epilogues laid out how unhappy June was in her relationship with Roxy. Not because she didn't like Roxy- but because it's hard to conceptualize yourself as being in a romantic relationship with someone a lot of the time when you're not aware of your own gender. It's very compelling.

I also really love the actions that she takes in Candy when she's visibly upset by how it seems her friends have fallen into this horrible nightmare world of suburbia. June's distance and alienation from suburbia causes harm to her relationship with her son and her wife, and don't get me wrong, the mindset she falls into by the end of Act One of HSBC is very unhealthy. But this distance also allows her to do and say the things no one else will out loud- her attempt to help Tavvy is the only actual material support that it seems ANYONE offers the poor kid.

Everybody needs to hear someone say “Nobody else will do. It has to be you", even if it's just once in their lives. As long as you can feel sure those words were sincere, you can live through anything, no matter how painful.an utena blinkie.

But on a super real note, June's character as a whole is incredibly relatable and I feel like we had similar struggles growing up lol. I feel like she's a person who's always willing to try and help other people, but who isn't so great at doing that for herself and because she's been playing the Game for so long, she just naturally falls into the role of "Hero" even if that comes at the price of her own life. During the entirety of Meat, June's just super depressed and while her friends know that none of them seemed to actually check in on her until they one day just randomly needed her help.

Homestuck often likes to play around with the question of "What does it take to be a 'hero'?" And I feel like that also goes hand in hand with the general questions about masculinity and what it means to be a "man", but June is literally the Heir of Breath and is the sole embodiment of Freedom. She isn't confined to the rules of any kind of gender or societal rules about heroism.

She is the one character who has meta-narrative powers who wants others to be free in a way that she wants for herself. Like, when Dave is asking her for advice on what she thinks about "Davekat" (I.E what does June think about them being in some kind of relationship) June is all for it and just says "You should do it! Go for it, because it seems like it's something you want anyway! And I kind of assumed you were already doing that, so just go ahead and do it!"

And even though she exists in a world that's meaningless, she wants everyone to just wake up one day and stop putting metaphorical shackles on themselves for the rest of their lives. Of course, her being the sole symbol of freedom and her friends being trapped in this hellscape where they believe they HAVE to be adults in a specific way, they just dig their heels in and say no to her.

Much like how Hussie was figuring out themselves while writing June as an MC, you get very closeted vibes even in the early acts with the denial of the self and lack of self introspection. Idk if that sort of stuff will get brought up in some kind of visual novel or not, but would be cool. Same with being left on her own and growing increasingly depressed looking at pics of her dad. Just lots of little things add up over time and it's fun to reread Homestuck knowing she's an egg. Even if that wasn't always intended, author bleeds into characters type stuff.

I've posted about this on tumblr before, but in HOMOSUCK there is a panel where Caliborn says something along the lines of "IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT THE SHITTIEST HORSES WILL BE GIVEN TO THE WOMEN". June gets the shittiest paper horse

A page of Homestuck (page 6498) where Caliborn is the narrator. The text says "ALL MEMBERS OF YOUR PARTY SIT ON THEIR MAJESTIC BEASTS OF BURDEN. AND PREPARE TO RIDE LIKE THE WIND. IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING. THAT THE INCOMPLETE HORSES. MUST BE RESERVED FOR THE WOMEN." The image has the homosuck versions of Dave, Cal, Rose, Jade, Roxy, and Jane on the horses in order of most complete to most incomplete. The most incomplete horse does not have a character on it yet, and (normal) June is standing next to it, making a disgusted face (presumably at Caliborns misogyny)

A Homestuck page with no text, but still in the "HOMOSUCK" part of Homestuck, where June mounts the most incomplete horse, with blue text above her (as her dialogue) that says "unf." This is page 6502
