This is NOT what I expected like what do you mean Vivziepop is working on Homestuck in the big 2025?? Also Toby fox voices John Egbert so it means that Vivziepop and Toby Fox are working on the same project it's insane
i put off reading homestuck for years on end, and i just finally decided to get through it a few weeks ago
between the drama and the pilot this might be the funniest time i could have possibly chosen to get into homestuck
^hosted on discord so one day it will perish beautifully
this shit came out while i was at work so imagine my reaction when i briefly looked at my phone in the bathroom and saw a discord notification saying “vivziepop is making a homestuck show”. honest to god thought it was a joke LMAO.
my expectations off the bat weren’t too optimistic - vivzie‘s previous work sucks ass and has a tendency of presenting an idea and then rushing to the next one without completing it. which might have bad implications for karkat being in the trailer. BUT!
i think people are being too doomer-ist about this. even with my low expectations, i think the fact that homestuck is getting an animated show at all is fucking awesome and extremely cool. there’s been a lot of homestuck projects lately, but they’ve all been aimed at existing fans (possibly the most “mainstream“ homestuck project has been hiveswap, on the account of being a separate game and taking an introductory approach to homestuck’s world, but let’s be real who is playing hiveswap if they didn’t already know about homestuck), so the fact that they’re making something with a much wider reach is such exciting news.
i’ve seen people complain about the artstyle, and i kind of agree, it looks weird to me, however much better when it’s actually moving. i kind of wish they kept the pixelation, i think it’s just so iconic to homestuck it’s a shame the style is so smooth. but i think a lot of people criticising it are nitpicking still frames, plus it’s a pilot, and changing style, designs etc between the pilot and the real thing is a pretty common thing.
as for the presence of karkat and hussie in the trailer, despite the fact that they probably will not actually come up in the story - i know i said it could mean bad things for the writing of the show, but i also don’t think it necessarily means that. to be charitable, the trolls are iconic to homestuck, most people who haven’t read homestuck know about the trolls existing, so i understand if the pilot/trailer wants to show them to signal to the audience “hey! these characters exist! watch our show, because later on, these guys show up! don’t you wanna see what’s up with them?”. as for hussie being there, another big thing about homestuck is the metanarrative, the fourth wall breaks etc. which can be hard to preserve in a show considering they (probably) won’t have actual narration, so again it makes sense to put hussie in the pilot/trailer to make the tone clear, and idk how they could make the fact that “this is a story about stories” clearer than having the literal author self insert show up as a character.
so, overall, fully expecting it to be mid or even downright bad, but i don’t think that even in that case it’s going to be catastrophic or anything. i don’t think watching a tv show could ever replace actually reading homestuck anyway, so if anything i’m fully ready for this show to become my stupid malformed baby that i like because it attempts to adapt homestuck (already a brave thing to do).
