Thoughts About Yiffany?

one of the funniest names to be conceived . i do actually like them a lot as a character though ... hope we see more soon

yiffy is fucking awesome. like. even when i was kind of ambivalent on post-canon works, i think there's a real joie de vivre to yiffy that can't be beaten.

She fucks, pl8in and simple. Can't w8 to see what kind of cr8zy 8ullshit she ends up doing.

I think I have had time to calm down when thinking about how Yiffany came to be. And I'm still angry, but more so at the adults in her life and how she came to be rather than who she is. Suppose they had made it so that Yiffany didn't hate her name, her parents, the circumstances of her life, and tried hard to put some bullshit positive spin on her existence by making Yiffany herself happy about it or some shit. In that case, I don't think I'd have ever really come back to read the rest of the comic.

But seeing that panel of Yiffany yelling "Fuck you!" to the rest of them when Vriska whisks them away to better opportunities reinvigorated in me the need to read Homestuck. And I think this website, as well as the few dialogue options you can read when you try to take her name, also vindicates the reader. Yiffany IS a terrible name, and the people who gave her the name ARE terrible, and no amount of wishy washy "I-it was a terrible writing decision on purpose!" will ever really abate the rightful anger people felt when reading it.

Yiffy's anger, in a way, is also MY anger, and I want to see that feral little gremlin child do great things.

I've seen some people say they like Yiffany's name, or at least say they don't like the alternate name "Ruby" for the character for various reasons (it breaks the naming scheme, it's similar to Jade/Rose which contradicts her distain towards her parents.)

I personally do hope that Yiffany changes her name. If not to "Ruby", then something else.

So far, I'm pretty interested in what the Beyond Canon team is doing with her character. It is kind of an unfortunate position to be trying to built off of what they were given to try and make a compelling character, but they seem to be taking it in the exact right direction so far.

Honestly though I was kind of on board with Yiffy and her name from the moment she was announced just because I did not enjoy Homestuck^2 at all up to that point and it was kind of just like "fuck it, why not. even if this is stupid at least they're swinging for the fences."

Well, I'll start by saying I hate that people treat the name as some kind of moral transgression on Hussie's part. You see this a lot in postcanon criticism, as if a story being bad or gross or treating the characters poorly or making you uncomfy is an act of harm. And I mean, come on! "Character has unfortunate name" is a joke as old as language itself! I don't have a problem with "Ruby" either per se, she might as well just create that name to claim it for herself, but...well, let's just say I'm glad these forums exist so I can stay away from Reddit or Twitter when I see someone being stupid.

As for her presence in the series, I'm a fan of what we've seen so far. She generally seems to take no shit, and her gimmick of refusing to speak until the most shocking possible moment had a great payoff. I do worry that she's gonna come across as kind of closed-off and cold, she has no real affection for anyone -- rightfully so, Candy's versions of Rose, Jade and Jane all fuckin' suck, but I would like to see another side of her around people like Tavvy, ostensibly the closest thing she has to a "friend". Maybe she'll have a dynamic with Vrissy or Harry that works better.

Not a fan of the name, hopes she changes it. I like her a lot, very much felt her anger about like... the world lol

I like her! I did like speculation fanart before we knew what she looked like. a fun character to throw into the mix with all the tensions in and out of her control surrounding her.

as for the whole name debate I think Yiffy/yiffany is like Fine? as a character name in general. if she goes on to claim a new name for herself then good for her but if not. oh well! and like… okay yeah tee-hee furry sex word but did you know “yiffy” in its original form was simply “yippie” in a made-up fox language? that there’s an illustrator who goes by Yiffy Gu (Yi Fei -> Yiffy)? I only bring this up because I feel like acting like this name is Horrific thing that Must Be Corrected when there’s real people out there who Chose that as the anglicized spelling of their name is like… Bad?? Like within the context of the story we Know how she was named and if she changes it then it makes sense good for her etc etc. but there is more to this world than wacky internet slang that even itself has changed in use and meaning over the years.

She's the poster child of the candy timeline up to and including her name and I very much hope she keeps it. If she does change her name I at least hope it's not to Ruby as I feel that's a bit too close to a win for people who harangued the old team about something that frankly didn't matter.

I'm not gonna write up a whole thing about why it's actually ok and unrelated to the furry sex word I just never thought it mattered that much and that it was a silly and exaggerated in character thing for jade to have named someone in a soap opera timeline (who remembers yiffyiff?) so seeing people make a big deal about it (especially some (no one here as far as I'm aware) who I knew were insincere in their concern for fairly obvious reasons) was a little eye-roll worthy for me.

i like her, tavvy, and swifer probably the most out of all the postcanon original characters. yiffy is something completely unlike we have seen in the story, whereas vrissy is a lot like vriska obviously, harry anderson can read a lot like john, and although i like him tavvy has basically the same personality as his namesake. yiffy is completely unique and i am excited to see how her character evolves. in terms of her name, i really never understood what the big problem is. its a dumb vaguely sexual joke, the kind of which has always been in homestuck. i get that its different for a major character to have that name but i dont think there is anything morally wrong with it like so many other people seem to. it doesn't seem any worse to me than something like "Future arachnidsGrip"
