will it be an extension of the pilot, with the pilot functioning as ep1, or will it be a more stretched out, fleshed out version of the pilot? im hoping its the latter because there's some stuff that needs to be ironed out

If it actually happens, I would expect them to start fresh. Have a gentler introduction for new viewers. Then again, they could make the first real episode a gentle introduction while still continuing on from the pilot; they're just about to start playing Sburb, which isn't the worst place to start the show proper.

generally speaking animation pilots are an "episode 0" that is shown to investors/platforms/networks/hungry fans on youtube/etc as a proof of concept for getting something more substantial made for real, and often are substantially different from the series proper (though given this is an adaptation thats also trying to adapt a Style I don't think thats too much of a concern in this case vs like Steven Universe as a random off the dome example). which is to say. they are probably gonna retread ground for ep1

Yeah shows like The Amazing Digital Circus where the pilot becomes episode 1 tend to be rare in animation from what I can gather?
But also, the pilot and episode 1 tend to be similar anyway, and that's probably doubly so for HS: The Animated Series since there's already an established story they're following.

I would much prefer a more fleshed out pilot for ep1. it kinda just moved at a breakneck pace ane I feel like a lot of these bits should've had more room to breathe.

strip down the pilot for parts. lots of these scenes are good and can stay in. axe the overindulgent narration past the beginning. maybe tone down some of John's swearing to save that for Karkat and Dave. let it run for twice the runtime, give a little more breathing room between scenes, adapt the rest of act 1. The buildup to the meteor and ending with John's house in the void is a perfect cliffhanger

Pilots aren't episode ones, they're proof of concepts. Things turning pilots into episode ones are a new trend in animation that I don't expect will happen here. By definition, the pilot is not the first episode, just a short slammed together megatrailer showing every key aspect - here are the main characters, here's the fight scene style, here's the general plot and here's some much cooler moments and characters we pinkie promise to bring in if you invest. It's not really meant to show what episode one would look like. If you check any classic cartoon's pilot vs episode one, you'll probably see a lot of differences! Some shows entirely change mediums from pilot to series, though we know that won't happen here, and some get major overhauls that probably also won't happen here since it's based on a very specific source material. Still, it's going to be slower in episode one. Pretty sure they said in the QnA that the pilot is not going to be episode one.
