Headline. Even when reading homestuck back in the old times i wasn't such a big fan of Jade, not dislike but rather indiffrence, but after watching the pilot i feel like she is... off? Anyone else feel that way?
She feels really off! I can't place my finger on what's precisely wrong, but something definitely is. If I were to guess, she comes off as much more whiney and just bubbly? While in the comic, at it's start, she seemed more as a friendly and cheerful, maybe even a bit mysterious from time to time.
But tbh I feel like all the kids were hyperbolized to some degree or another. I'm just blaming it on the fact that it's a pilot and I hope they'll seem different once they get more screentime.
Main thing that stood out for me was that Jade straight up sounds several years younger than the rest of the characters. "Did. You. Get. My. PWESENT!" I get that she's supposed to act less self-conciously "mature" than the other three, but perhaps they pushed that a bit too far.

Thank god someone feels the same, she just kind of seemed to be infantilised instead of being just cheerful, but to be honest i don't think any of the kids got done great as well, except for Rose as for me she seems in character, John and Dave i dont vibe with that much as well. Really hope they change it
She is literally the oldest of the 4 kids.
YES. FINALLY. SOMEBODY uNDERSTANDS. SHE FEELS SEVERALLY BABIED AND BOILED DOWN TO "THE CHEERY ONE".. SHE FEELS MORE LIKE JuNES LITTLE SISTER RATHER THAN SOMEBODY HER AGE. I FEEL LIKE WHAT THEY FORGOT IS THAT SHES A 13 YEAR OLD WHO LIKES CHILDISH THINGS, NOT A CHILD. I AGREE WITH YOu WHEN SAYING THEY INFANTALIZED HER HEAVILY. IT SuCKS BECAuSE I LOVE JADE. SHES MY FAVORITE BETA KID!
ON A SIDE NOTE. IVE SEEN SOMEONE SAY THE REASON SHES LIKE THAT IS MAYBE BECAuSE JADE IS SLEEPING AND ON PROSPIT DuRING THAT TIME BuT IT STILL FEELS KINDA WRONG. EVEN IF SHES STILL SLEEPING.
Sincerely, rupaul superfans
all of their characteristics and personalities of them all feel sooo wrong, the voices (that I personally don't like) aren't helping that case at all
rails b4 pails!!
:O3
Even if it was her on prospit, it's still a weird choice to show her differently in the pilot. It's supposed to work as an introduction of Homestuck and it's characters for both the old and new fans, and, well... New ones will expect something entirely different, and they know the old fandom was just dying to see the loyal portrayal of all characters in the animation. That's why they sneaked in the trolls, after all. Not a single side will be satisfied
Hopefully they do a better job in the future, but at the same time, we can't necesarrily expect them to stick to the original 1:1. If that were the case, we'd never see the end and I'm already curious on how they plan to cram all the content into what, 20 minutes episodes? Good lord. I just pray they don't rush it too much, it'd be a much bigger disservice to the characters than a bad tasting line of dialogue
I honestly enjoyed the pilot a lot, but I think all of the performances except Rose need some tweaking. More irony poisoning from Dave, Jade chilled-out rather than manic, and John a bit less beaten down and world-weary. OK, maybe Rose could do with a touch less gravel too - some of her lines sounded like a louche 60-year-old ogling the waiters on a cruise liner.

As much as i hate to say it, i don't think they are going to change the kids much, i mean everybody who is new to homestuck and is here purely from the pilot would not be happy if the characters suddently acted completly diffrent than the pilot. I agree that there is no way to satisfy anyone, but damn i just can not get used to the way they act.
Archeologist, I have to disagree, at least to some degree. There is going to be a lot of people who hear of it from the first time, and led by curiosity, will also check out the comic and find the differences appaling.
And yeah, I can agree with the message just above. The kids do need some tweaking. Fortunately, the changes we're talking about are pretty subtle so it won't be that hard to change it or to even turn a blind eye to some things, which actually sounds like a Very Homestuck Experience.
I think a lot of people have been desensitized to what a pilot is (mb "desensitized" is the wrong word, idk). A lot of YT Indie Animations use the term "pilot" as a name for an ep 1, especially for glitch projects. Not that that's a bad thing. Linguistic drift is a real thing. I'm just saying that a lot of people seem to think that this is more of a representation of how the show will look than it truly is. There is definitely going to be some coarse correction from here.
Hopefully. Im already seeing a lot of people complain about how fast paced the pilot is, but i think its not that bad personally, it does do its job as a pilot. Mostly worried about the characters, really wondering what will come out once it gets around ACT 6
Pat The M,
Ah yes, the Hazbin Hotel phenomena. It's obvious they're not going to redo it but the pilot is still supposed to sell the idea, not just be a start. If this is how the full animation turns out, the show is going to have the exact same issues HH or even Helluva Boss has and I really really naively hope it doesn't come to that
well supposed to sell the idea in a very literal "appeal to the people with money/networks/distributors" sense. there is also the caveat of yes selling to new/old fans in a merch to prove "hey look this is popular and sells" way so they do want to it to appeal to a decently wide group... but that being said with the exception of the examples given where they do a pilot-as-episode 1 type deal i cant really think of any animation indie or otherwise that doesnt have SOME kind of tweaking of characters (in either design or voice direction or both) between initial pilot and the actual series.
that being SAID
i get why people dont like how jade is portrayed and to some degree I do think toning things down a bit to get more of the Weird future knowing just-vague-enough-about-things-to-sound-normalish mystery about early acts jade across, i personally think in terms of conveying the "voice" of that style of typing in 2009 into animation it works really well ESPECIALLY from the "is a furry but denying it to not seem too weird/save face" pocket of anthro fan spaces that could be found on like neopets or deviantart or wherever. not that id know about that from experience i was always p clear that i was a furry and chill about it XP
Also, another thing is that she has like 20 lines in the pilot. Of course there is going to be some flanderization when a character has so little lines. That's how you get the character across.
I still do think they could of done her character a bit better, but in such a limited time you do have to make some concessions.
