with how long homestuck is (and with the amount of intermissions that people skip) many people (myself include) get trapped the fandom echo chamber. what are some cases of mischaracterization or flanderization that you wish were different? what is a character interpretation of yours that you wish more people had? whats a character detail youre itching to talk about? go crazy!!

seconding the "characterizes jade as a perpetual child", adding people relegating kanaya (and by extension rose) as purely existing to be a "mom friend" while ignoring that kanaya only really behaves in that kind of mothering way (and its still more in a fussing over and annoying you kind of way than the idealized way people portray it) towards people she's got feelings for like rose or vriska (and karkat apparently according to hussie)
tea drinking lesbians rosemary my BELOATHED.
Everybody needs to hear someone say “Nobody else will do. It has to be you", even if it's just once in their lives. As long as you can feel sure those words were sincere, you can live through anything, no matter how painful.
This isn't serious at all and is just my own personal pet peeve with how people write John's interests but:
Stop making John a Star Wars fan...please T_T
John likes campy action films that aren't realistic but that do not hold any trace of high fantasy. His favorite movie is Con-Air with Nick Cage, which is by and large a very silly action flick that is cheesy, unserious at times, and has a lot of flashy explosions.
He has never once been a fan of Star Wars like at all. So many fics make John quote Star Wars when it's the exact opposite kind of movie he'd enjoy T_T Star Wars is a slow, episodic high fantasy sci-fi film that takes itself seriously 100% of the way through. That kid likes Ghostbusters and schlocky action films from the late 80s and 90s. He enjoys shit like Night At the Museum and Little Monsters. I get it, though, because John is very geeky in that way, but it's pretty clear his favorite kinds of films are comedies.
Here's a John Egbert Movie list just off the top of my head what he referenced:
-Night At the Museum
-Zoolander
-Ghostbusters
-Con-Air
There's even a pretty good IMDB List OF some of the posters on his wall in his bedroom:
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls050749872/
The same can be said for Karkat as well. Many people only get that Karkat likes romances. What they don't get however, is that he is a fan of stupid as hell, and overly complicated Romantic COMEDIES. He lists shit like Miss Congeniality that's far different than stuff like "The Notebook," you know T_T? There's even a hilarious moment in Beyond Canon when John and Karkat both argue about what kind of silly action hero Vriska looks like when she arrives. Karkat watches the same kind of silly, terrible movies as John, but he prefers Romance films more. So stop making all his "datenight" Movie ideas in those fic,s sad stuff like The Notebook or Titanic. Make it something like 50 First Dates or 10 Things I Hate About You.
Anyways, does anyone remember the Lyrics to "Karkat: Be a Fanboy"? Here's a letterbox account that has all the movies that he would definitely like.
https://letterboxd.com/codenox/list/karkats-be-a-fanboy/
Also Dave wouldn't listen to 21 Pilots or Eminemem, he is specifically a fan of 90s west coast hip hop. He idolizes Snoop Dog. That white boy knows all the lyrics to Tupac Shakur's Hit 'Em Up. If you played that Kitchen Sink or Car radio song in front of him I fear he'd do this shit:
I think people just write that he'd like them because he is a white kid who likes rap, but come on now And if you have to make him a white boy who likes rap at least let him listen to Tyler the Creator T_T
now i'm imagining jade putting on the beastie boys because she thinks its the perfect confluence of furries and rap, but failing to catch the east-west coast dichotomy by growing up off the map
this is more general fandom opinion than specific writing but terezi's masking is so deep that she gets off as the "good one" of the scourge sisters. "vriska did nothing wrong" is an argument when "terezi did nothing wrong" is a tacit agreement
i think both of them are really cool and interestingly written but judgement is just so obviously clouded
I agree with the person above me, though I'll also add that the comic itself contributes to this somewhat. Terezi undergoes something of a transformation in act 6 that doesn't feel especially earned, and mainly serves to infantilise Terezi in many ways. Not to say Terezi wasn't somewhat complex or vulnerable in the earlier acts, but it's like all her eccentricities and defense mechanisms disappeared off-screen for the sake of making her more melodramatic, and those very things are what contributed to her moral grayness, as they do for Vriska.
re:Deacon
Sorry to double post, but... I mean, given Hussie's simplistic style, I would say the exact kind of top Karkat is wearing is pretty up to interpretation. The only thing that technically changed is that some fan-contributions depict it as having a turtle neck, but I don't think Hussie would draw a long-sleeved t-shirt any different from a plain old crew neck sweater.
I doubt hussie himself even remembers if it was a t-shirt or a sweater. Dave went from wearing a short-sleeve t-shirt to a long-sleeved one, with red collar and sleeves. And that happened without fan contributions!
no one ever gets jane crocker right and its a god damn tragedy. just generally people tend to make the crockerberts a lot more emotionally mature than they really are...
i wish people remembered that jane likes detectives more! i see a lot of femme janes with a big focus on baking but she's always been a mustachio'd detective enjoyer first and foremost to me. i figure the baking is a side effect of the crocker name.
