opinions on the VAs for the pilot?

this isn't the fault of any of the vas but I think these characters have existed in my head for so long anything would sound jarring. I am disappointed in non-southern dave and also i didn't like rose much :(

Toby is solid and I have no qualms, even though he makes problematic media about a rude dinosaur and her rotund friend. I love Cherami in general and think she's a good enough fit. The other two I'm not super familiar with and not enthusiastic about them from the trailer. If we have to have a white dave, he needs to be going full-on soulful white boy with swag in my opinion.

Jade is the voice of Danny Phantom and Tails the Fox so that's interesting.

I really really really do not like Dave's voice. No texan accent, not monotone, sounds too similar to John. Sucks that the whole cast is white when this was an opportunity to maybe actually have "aracial" not just mean "white default" for the characters. Toby honestly sounds great as John and I love that, tho I don't imagine he'd still be voicing John if the thing got greenlit past the pilot.

Overall, hoping for a recast if this moves past a pilot :V

shrugs honestly its hard for me to have a real opinion just yet based only on the short trailer we got. i will say i definitely would have liked to hear dave with more of a southern accent but i cant really say i think any of them sound good or bad just yet. and since its just a pilot theres always the possibility the voices could change if it got picked up for a whole series

I enjoy Johns! I think Rose's voice is fine but not Lalonde-ish enough if you get what I mean. I dislike Dave's voice from what we've seen, it feels too expressive, if they were going for a less monotone voice I think project [S] shows a pretty good Dave voice.

i think that dave not having a southern accent is fine because he lives in a city. however i think his voice should have been slightly lower just to distinguish him from john a bit more. i am glad they made him actually sound like a kid, but some 13 year olds do have deeper voices

i'm torn. i'm someone who works on a few homestuck voice acting projects (specifically voft and podfeels), so character voice is a topic i tend to think about a lot.

i really like toby as june, and i don't really *mind* the rose VA they have, its not great but not terrible, although the delivery feels way too flat to me. but dave is where i sort of have issues? he feels so un-dave-like in a way that i personally find jarring. nearly every dave voice i've heard fit the same sort of deeper slightly monotone voice that make me go "that sounds like a dave", but this is just so different. when I first heard the dave's voice i thought it was june.

I cannot comment on jade orkarkats voice because we haven't heard them yet, but jade is being voiced by tails' VA, which is the only voice i've heard her as. i can't imagine jade with the tails voice, but i also assume this is an actor with range and isn't just gonna pull the same voice again. i honestly don't know what to expect.

also, i watched the spindlehorse panel the announcement was made in because i wanted more context on the show because i got a little bit obsessed, and apparently all these voices were chosen by hussie herself (i have clipped it for context:https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkx2WFdTJujtjsfdW42O2ukewHOKUwH3VkI), and dave was allegedly one of the ones they put the most care into choosing as "these characters are so beloved and we want to make sure we get them right", which makes it weird how un-dave-like it sounds.

I'm like 70% sure that the Dave VA was chosen at least in part because one of his first big roles was as Marco Diaz in Star vs. the Forces of Evil who initially is a very dave-like character. Marco changes a lot over the course of the series, in particular after season one, but I can't imagine this wasn't a factor in the casting process. but idk maybe i'm just completely wrong lol

So far? June and Dave sound a bit too similar? Also Dave's less nonchalant than I'd hoped, but we did only hear a few seconds of him so like... I'm waiting to see what Hussie and/or Skye Henwood gave Richard Horvitz in regards to how the characters would sound? I'm still optimistic, we were only given less than a minute out of a full 11 minutes. We'll just have to see. 💜

For all y’all anime fans out there the VA for Dave in the pilot is also the dub voice for Yuji Itadori from JJK. A surprising choice for a Dave I have to admit.

i really love these voices. it felt like they were expressive, and they sounded like real 13 year olds. i didn't listen to let's read homestuck specifically since they didn't match my headcanons, and this is way closer. i know people don't think dave's supposed to have a deep southern drawl or monotone 1)he's 13 2) he's from huston and i've never met anyone from huston with an accent 3) the line we're talking about is him screaming at john because a meteor is careening towards john's house. i like that he is actually reacting. dave reacts in the comic. i feel like making him monotone would not translate well into animation. as for all the actors being white, i hope the alpha kids have some non white voice actors. rose's voice is not what i expected, but i actually really like it. what's important to me is that these are professional, experienced voice actors. they can do their jobs and convey emotion. i'm so curious to see, if this series gets adapted, what they do with the trolls

The two people I know from Texas are an IRL friend of mine, and Revscarecrow. Neither of them really has much accent. Rev also knew Dave was from Texas going into his liveread (because people kept comparing them and he got annoyed), but he didn't give Dave an accent when voicing him either. I do not think it's a problem at all that Dave doesn't have an accent and I'm honestly kind of shocked it was that big a priority for many people because the regions of the US that each kid comes from are by-and-large absolutely meaningless in the text of the narrative. I mean, Dave has no central AC, one fan turned on and the window open in what the narration describes as a particularly warm day in APRIL. In fucking Texas??? He should be utterly soaked in sweat at all times.

Anyway, Colleen O'Shaughnessey is well-experienced and talented, I'm sure she'll do fine with Jade. It's honestly Toby whom I have no idea what to expect from. He's obviously talented in a lot of ways, even did vocals on some of his serious songs like Greatest Living Show (not that those are easy to hear, buried so deep in the mix), but this could be a Final Space situation where a Famous Internet Person in the lead role doesn't necessarily lead to a great performance.

I know Toby Fox did voice acting work before, he voiced acted a skeleton character in the We Baby Bears show. Maybe his John voice wont be that bad? Since he has some history with voice acting.

what really is most important to me is vriska HAS to be voiced by a trans woman. if they do the cis high school mean girl vriska that i see so commonly i will be disappointed. vriska needs to be a clocky tgirl or its not vriska

@stagelights Glad that Hussie is personally vetting these voices and heavy in the decision making processes. Also agree, Vriska should be a deeper voiced transfem VA. Valleygirl accent can stay, just have a trasnfem VA PLEASE!
