Heyo! anyone here like Scott Pilgrim? i'd love to know if there are fellow MSPA fans who also like SP.

I'm making this thread where anyone can say any thoughts and opinions they have towards any aspect of the franchise. and I will respond to said thoughts with my own opinion! I am currently reading through my comics for the third time. I am on Vol. 3.

I 100% vibe with this thread. Wallace is GOATED. The Novel was WAY better than the movie, but I love doofy ol Michael Cera and know every line in the movie. And the newest Scott Pilgrim Animated Series (Can-ime?!?) is so freaking good OMFG ):0)

The Real Homestuck?

That's the friends we made along the way!

Yes i agree with the statement for anyone unfamiliar. The anime should be watched last, because it's so much more rewarding that way! But you can engage with the comics or movie in any order.

I for one started by watching the movie Scott Pilgrim vs the World, and it was the BEST thing I've ever seen. I watched that movie 4 times in a row before it got removed from netflix, and when i found a pirated version a year later, i watched it 5 more times in a row. When i got christmas money last year, I bought all the books! I love the comics so much too. I keep them next to my bedside :]

I really like Wallace too, he's such a good character. Kieran Culkin portrays him so well.

i like all the SP media i engaged with equally. But yeah I totally get why u like the comics more! it is a lot more character focused, while the movie is more action oriented. and the anime gives Ramona the character depth she needed. One of the downsides of the movie for me was that she seems too aloof and mean rip

I first read Scott Pilgrim when I was, like, 11. So obviously I didn't get it at all, and just thought it was about cool guys kicking ass and getting chicks. I first re-read it at fifteen, and then once more at nineteen, each time doing a much better job at 'getting it'. I think it's a really great, heartfelt comic about self-critique, consequences, learning, and growing into adulthood. On that vein, even though I thought the anime looked absolutely gorgeous, I just couldn't help but kinda hate it. It felt like a lot of the more mature nuance of the comic was dumbed down for a more general audience. Not to mention the plot point of Scott growing up to be a total fuck-up after the ending of the original comic canon. Like, what? The whole point of the comics was that Scott faced himself in the end and was finally able to start growing as a person, and you're telling me that none of that ended up mattering?

Not to mention, I thought the original comics had some GREAT and incredibly heartfelt and grounded queer representation, whilst the anime's queer representation felt a lot more... Shallow? Wallace's promiscuity is played up to the point of caricature, the kiss between Knives and Kim is completely removed only to be replaced with whatever the hell THAT was with Kim and Roxy, which just felt like arbitrary fanservice. I could go on.

I totally understand WHY people would like the anime, though! It was definitely a FUN watch, and a visual treat, but the writing just really irked me, I guess.

Who cares, though, Gideon Graves was my 'Oh fuck I like men' awakening as a kid, and they gave him CRAZY Tboy Swag in the anime. I need him. I desire him. Yes he is evil and I fuck with that. I cannot fix him but I can make him worse, which is far more intimate.

Ah dang sorry to hear u didnt like it x( I see why you didnt like it your points are valid.

Idk if this will make u feel better but I heard the anime is confirmed to be its own universe (or universes) so In my head Scott and Ramona regressing could just be contained over there and it doesnt affect the Comics universe at all rip.

Also another point. While I ended up being ok with Future Scott, I was not ok that i was ROBBED by how snubbed the Katayanagi Twins were. "oh yeah they were involved but they dont really do anything else they just leave right after" what??? they get NO DEVELOPMENT in any of the media! it makes me wonder whats the point of them being characters?? Robot-01 has more of a personality than them! (I like Robot-01 tho. he's cute and he is indeed a special little guy). But yeah. In a discord server im in i always end up dissing the Twins. I could go on a rant omg rip

Also you bringing up the point of the og comics reminds me of the new game coming out. I know the new game is gonna be its own self-contained universe too with a completely new story. And now im starting to wonder if theyre gonna repeat the theme of growing as a person again? Since ramona and scott are together at the start then i hope they dont repeat the issue with what happened in the anime.

Last point is that I like Gideon Graves too he just never changes and its so funny. "oh im not evil anymore SIKE im going to blow up matthew patel up." and i like how he is enabled to be evil all the time haha

scott pilgrim is very cool and ive got all the color hardcovers !

i honestly need to give it a reread to help refresh my thoughts on it, same with the movie and anime

the anime is special to me because i watched it when it dropped, while i was on a trip in new york with a dear friend for a few days

and i'll just always connect it with that, a very nice memory :3

aww thats so sweet. glad u had such a lovely memory

and it’s awesome you have the hardcovers! I always wanted to get the “Evil Edition” Hardcovers, but those cost more than the paperbacks, and I only had so much christmas money, so I went with the paperbacks lol

totally fair, and the paperbacks even have some little cool stuff that isnt in the hardcovers for whatever reason (though the hardcovers make up for it with other cool bonuses)

like the guest comics !

honestly... i kinda want to get a paperback set...

presentation wise, both sets of books carry their own vibe in how they're designed and that is very neat to me

(not to mention those 20th anniversary box sets, god dang)

I love the comics, movie, and anime, but I do think the comic is my favorite of the 3. Just because Scott Pilgrim is so densely packed with information and gags in every frame, and with a comic you're in control of the rate that information gets beamed into your brain. Like you can take your time to absorb each panel, turn the page when you want, go back if you want. Whereas both the movie and show are very faithful in keeping that same density, but time always passes at 1 second per second, and constantly pausing to see the things that exist for less than 1 second is just a disruptive and bad way of experiencing it. So in order to enjoy them you have to kind of learn to be at peace with the fact that you won't be able to get everything, just let some details flow on by without stopping to acknowledge them. It requires a whole different mindset which is less satisfying to me. (I still love them though.)

Yeah that makes sense! I notice new details all the time when i read the comics and facepalm when its so obvious the whole time. Like, can you believe that in my first read through, I COMPLETELY glossed over that Scott Pilgrim and I have the same birthday?

I like all the media equally, but more often than not I always go to the comics and look for specific panels to reference. I'm a big fan of the comic's composition, and i try to mimic it to the best of my ability when I'm doodling my own comics :]

So i guess that means i like the comics more? Everyone here is right, the comics have so much details in it, its fun to look for lol
