Do you guys also read webcomics?
Do you also cry when you realize story driven webcomics are a dying breed?
This is the thread for you, kinda a webcomic general.

What webcomics do you guys like to read other than Homestuck and related, I really like Chimaera High, wish it didn't get cancelled.
Love everyone.
Three bangers I haven't seen anyone mention yet are:
Slightly Damned - I've been reading this one for SO SO long. It goes in a lot of directions but initially it focuses on Rhea Snaketail after being sent to the Ring of the Slightly Damned in hell and trying to figure out 1. how to get out and 2. who killed her.
Skin Deep - What if fantasy creatures are real and live and walk among us using the power of medallions, and sometimes you can inherent being a magical species AND the "look human" spell which can break under certain circumstances and suddenly makes life a lot more difficult and Weird.
Softies - Earth explodes and space trash collector finds the single surviving human, a child by the name of Kay. Arizona (the trash collector) still has to like. do his work. so adventures and shenanigans happen
honorable mention
Poppy O'Possum - It has long since been abandoned but the worldbuilding is fire. A possum mom tries to make a new quiet and relaxing life for her and her daughter. This does not happen to truly astronomical levels.
monster pulse by magnolia porter definitely made a lasting impression on me when i read it
i should reread it... its rad
re: The Grief Complex
ohhhhh yes. so good. the layouts and colors in that comic are so fantastic. i did not know the second phase was out!!

i will eternally go to bat for Octopus Pie
, which has been done for... oh god like eight years now? but there's been a couple one-off stories since.
it starts off as kind of a goofy episodic comic about hipster brooklynites (NO WAIT WAIT KEEP READING) but gradually becomes more serialized and starts get into the ways its characters tick. it reminds me a little bit of Liminal Space
in that regard.
the author, Meredith Gran, made a p'n'c-adventure game called Perfect Tides
that was good, but is currently working on its sequel that... i really think might end up being one of the best adventure games of all time. i got to playtest a little and it was like magic.
oh and then GODHEAD
which is basically a fraf so why aren't y'all reading it. no one is doing it like carmi
the only webcomic ive been actively keeping up with these days is runaway to the stars by jay eaton. its about an alien named talita who works at a small recycling plant in the middle of nowhere. but her life becomes more exciting when she meets an ai pirate who asks for her help evading the authorities, along with a human lesbian couple who work as translators at the recycling plant... and with the power of friendship perhaps they'll commit a major felony together <3
beep boop 🤖🚀
What happens next is so underrated of a webcomic, its about the future of people involved in a murder and how much it affected the lifes they are trying to live.
The artstyle maybe isnt for everyone but develops with time, but the sauce of it its the writing, is one of not the most realistic depiction of depression on internet i ever seen and the characters are all so human it hurts; there isnt a single completly innocent or absolute monster in the whole cast because you probably know/knew people like them
Also Vikki is goals
These first two drafts rejected with a single written critique:
“It is rapturous still, the way you fill a page. I find it to be lacking.”

SUPER seconding gunnerkrigg court! I've also been reading it at least ten years but I prefer to wait for a hug chunk of updates to come out and catch up that way.
I've also been keeping up with Avas Demon, which is a little,, on the nose with its symbolism lol, but it's so so so incredibly beautiful.
8 bit theater is my comfort read for comedy. the beginning is weak and it takes some time for the author to find their style, but once it gets on track it’s a ton of good jokes
tara and raven superfan
this might not be much of a surprise to people who read my comic, but my trash of choice is dumbing of age recently. i'm comparatively a pretty new reader, but where else are you gonna get a comic about the complex and heavy romantic feelings invoked by being in college and masturbating in public together.

what happens next is also extremely good, especially its first arc, "dog names". as someone who was truly in the fucking trenches when it comes to that era of tumblr, the era where people hurt each other because they don't have the social tools to not hurt each other, it hurts just right. it's one of the only things to really, really capture what it's like to be a teenager with no identity except liking fictional characters, and the places that can lead you.

my sleeper hit is if animal trapped, a megaman battle network sprite comic that i really just adore. it's got this masterful amount of expression just using megaman battle network sprites, and a kind of thoughtful, maybe even aspirationally pretentious tone.

and my friendshill is heart of the storm, by my friend harrie. it's a kind of pulpy, lesbian fantasy pirate romance that is absolutely lavishly illustrated and a lot of fun. i'm continually surprised it hasn't taken off in the ways i think it deserves.

SHAPED OR MOLDED FORMS appear to have been formed from a plastic material through directly applied force.
ABSTRACT FORMS are of uncertain origin.
One of my first and favourite webcomics was Narbonic by Shaenon K. Garrity, the tale of a gerbil-obsessed mad scientist with big hair and her long-suffering henchman. It ran for about 7 years, with some pretty elaborate plot arcs. Fantastic characters, splendidly nerdy humour, and pretty moving in places. The art (black-and-white, hand=drawn) is not particularly polished, but very expressive. I feel like that "scrappy home-made webcomic" vibe has been lost in recent years.
She drafted in a co-writer, Jeffrey Channing Wells, for Skin Horse, a follow-up about the black-ops social service organistion dealing with non-human Americans. That one ran for 14 years!

been keeping up with gunnerkrigg court and order of the stick for years and love them both dearly, haven't kept up with paranatural but remember liking that a lot too! bob and george is a bizarrely proto-homestuck gag-a-day sprite comic that i love not sure it's actually still funny if you don't already have a place in your heart for it but it's a bit of comfort media for me, similarly kid radd is great and comes highly recommended for homestuck fans. 1/0 is weird and kind of thorny but has stuck with me for a long time and has some interesting metafictional themes, what happens next is an incredibly dour ongoing comic i love dearly. i was also surprised to see poorly planned comics mentioned near the top of the thread, that's a very special piece of art which i don't know if i can recommend in good faith cuz it kinda ruined my mood for like a week but will always have a spot in my brain, what a beautiful intricate nightmare.
not really a deep cut ig but if you havent read 17776 youre really missing out. you will read 17776. anyone reading this comment will open a new tab and read 17776. lets all hold hands and read 17776.
Ooh, i've been following Order Of The Stick and Paranatural for a long time, yeah!! can recommend both, though order of the stick is a very old comic at this point that started as a gag-a-day dnd joke comic in like, 2003?? so, be aware of that lol. but imo its genuinely grown into a very compelling story over time (that also happens to have a lot of dnd jokes lol)
paranatural is just fantastic, *incredibly* funny writing and very neat characters! i do miss the old full-comic format sometimes cuz zack morrison is genuinely amazing at visual gags, but i think they handled the transition to partial-prose really well and have carried a lot of that same humor into the writing
oh and i also have to recommend Kill Six Billion Demons! over-the top mythological fantasy...space opera(?) with absolutely fascinating worldbuilding and mythology. the characters and their arcs are fantastic, i love the plot and the themes (lots of ideas about power and agency and cycles of violence and the ways they fuck up the people and societies caught up in them, which is Exactly My Shit), the art...starts a bit rough tbh but gets a lot better and has a lot of *incredibly* good character and creature and location designs. lots of very pretty landscapes and cityscapes and big fight scenes with demons and angels and demiurges cutting airships in half using ridiculous abilities with names like ONE THOUSAND CUBIT SWORD (why yes, it *did* briefly start off as an MSPFA back in the day, how could you tell?) i just. i love it, a whole lot, lmao.
Coming in here to say that I recently started kill 6 billion demons and OUGH its so good. I just recently got past book 2 (I dont think thats too far into k6bd) but its been fantastic, it reminds me of all the comics and graphic novels that got me into webcomics as a medium. My favorite is white chains so far, she has GOT TO get away from any other angel ever, they all treat her so fucking terribly.
i read what happens next after seeing people here recommend it and they're right. it's So Good. i'm Never Going To Be Normal Again
i will figure out a good signature. Eventually.
