Just how much Homestuck related socials does Makin own, now?

I can name:

- Homestuck.net

- The Homestuck.net Bluesky and Twitter

- (apparently) The Homestuck Discord

- (apparently) r/homestuck

I feel like giving one guy control over all of these spaces is a little scary. Not to mention, they (because someone doesn't have pronouns in bio!) have been pretty vocal about supporting Gio and apparently the mods have started deleting any negative opinions of him off the Homestuck reddit, I don't know how it is with the Discord though I don't tread that far idk. I would recommend just not using these if you're concerned with unbiased reporting.

If you (or even Makin themselves, since I know they're here) can prove me wrong somehow, I'd also appreciate that, I'm not too concerned with keeping a grudge. These forums and Tumblr are one of the only major Homestuck communities on the web where everyone has gotten to speak their mind on the situation and it's really great.

I have literally been mocked for making jokes about post canon Jade Harley and Jane Crocker suffering horible fates, like I just want to heir my grievances towards what post canon has done to them.

Any who should Makin be deplatformed?

Don't ask why Geno hates Jade Harley.

If by "deplatforming", you mean "reducing their sole possession of the Homestuck fandom", I think so? I don't think it's healthy for anyone, especially not someone this consistently immature, to have this much control over the community space. Homestuck.net can stay as it's their personal project, but the rest feel overkill.

In the last few years Makin has made a couple of suggestions in our public discord to host the MSPA wiki on homestuck.net, which was a nice offer but one we had to politely turn down for the same reasons we've turned down the offer from other directions: at full strength we're a team of maybe six people and we just don't have the peoplepower to initiate a new project like that. Whole interaction seemed very cordial at the time!

Then a couple months ago on Reddit I spot the guy claiming that, quote, "the current admin refuses to migrate the site to another host". Just throwing a tiny skeleton crew of fans - working on a passion project that benefits everyone on a purely volunteer basis in their spare time - under the bus for no good fucking reason!

Such a small thing in the grand scheme of it all, but it really put me there in the position of some guy feeling entitled to my work because he happens to own an important fandom related domain or something

Honestly I feel like a larger issue for this community is just that the main ways to communicate with one another are monopolized rather than being shared by the whole fandom. FRAF is a community run by multiple people who are all very open and honest about how the website works and functions, the HICU is run by multiple people who are also open and honest about how it works, but the main avenues for even talking about Homestuck are just owned and operated by this one guy who most people don't really like T_T.

It makes me a little excited for the FRAF forums to get more popular because it'll at least give people a different option besides Discord or Reddit. I also don't feel like any of the moderators here on the forums are the sole owner of the place which is also great, I haven't witnessed any admin abuse or whatever or obnoxious trolling on the part of the staff.

I kind of like makin, but I think it's nice to have other places in the community to talk about homestuck that aren't part of that one (dream)bubble. (lolz). Regardless of how impartial you try to be, biases and tastes will influence your style of leadership, and lead the culture you're influencing into a specific niche. This compounds over time until eventually you've got something that might exclude a lot of others who would otherwise love to engage with that community. I think this has happened with homestuck's online places. Specifically in roleplay.

The biggest reason I haven't really engaged with homestuck in a long time is because there's this bizarre, draconian dislike of rping in the discord and reddit. You can't even use typing quirks ("quirking" as they now call it because i guess it needed a verb lol). I can understand this somewhat, but going back to that first point, whatever definition they've developed for "roleplay" is completely different from the one I have. I think roleplay is taking on the role of another character. In homestuck, that's using their typing style, pretending you're them, and interacting with other people doing the same thing, typically in an ongoing format. Like 90% of posts I see on that discord which are immediately threatened with a ban with a really curtly worded "do not roleplay", are not roleplay. They're people making jokes or quoting characters. Or other times It's not even anything approaching that, but some moderator has decided it is "roleplay" by some excessively liberal definition of the term, and is being rude about it. They're not even using a chumhandle or trolltag or anything. I feel like I'm walking on eggshells visiting that place, and it's very heartening to finally have somewhere where that influence isn't present. It's healthier for the fandom to have a multitude of sites, which each construct their own cultures surrounding Homestuck, instead of putting all your eggs into the same few community figures' hands. Better to let a community be itself, instead of trying to curate one into just having specific behaviors that one person has decided are acceptable. Again, I dont't think makin is bad, because i think he's done a lot of really cool work as like someone who's archived a lot of comic resources and wants to have a community around. I just want to learn what it's like to rp and be able to express how i feel without people thinking i'm being "performative" or "putting on an act" or whatever.

I was going to make a thread about the Homestuck Reddit/Discord and the creator Makin, bit looking through here, HOLY SHIT, those communities were pretty terrible. Most of the people complain about everything being shit post Cascade and just shit on newgens. Also they're the reason I was shitting on Jade Harley, their comments made me uncomfortable about Jade, so I lashed out.

Should we all voice our complaints on the Reddit and Discord?

Don't ask why Geno hates Jade Harley.

I was only ever briefly on the reddit discord but not really active... then when Pesterquest came out when people were shitting on one of the character designs and I said I liked it everyone accused me of being the artist so I figured I might as well just leave LOL. I also get kind of overwhelmed by large discords so maybe it was for the best. Are there there parts of it that yall like(d)? Or thought they could have been doing a lot better/differently overall? Or do you think most things were like. from up-high Makin related/general reddit culture issues.

adfsgge i was on the hs discourse and nary two hours after pointing out that the whole hiveswap fiasco as relayed by gio doesn't make any goddamn sense, he SHOWS UP IN MY DMS as if 1) i was a person of importance, which i was not and still am not 2) as if i wanted him there. 3) as if this isn't a job for his LAWYER ASDFGHJKL

so i was like "haha cool i'm being watched"

i still stayed, trying to change things with oasis, but it became obvious that that was never happening.

we both left when makin and company started pontificating on how hussie's transition was a marketing scheme. i tried to stand up for hussie but in a cowardly way. as in like "these conversations impact all trans people, this is setting a bad precedent" and "i don't really understand what they mean by "clowngender", but they seems like they're being serious, they're presenting androgenously", and "it's none of my buisness what hussie's gender is". fuuuuuuuuck that. i wish i had been meaner about it. i am not in the business of questioning people's gender identity, and i don't fuck with people who do.

evidence:

sorry, it is truly deep-fried. also love the patreon link. also making money off of hussie's work while simultaneously demeaning their self-expression.

it seems like when hussie refers to "clowngender" they are drawing upon not only the history of clowns, but drag and goth culture, which are heavily queer. and even if they weren't, makin is still being an asshole. hussie was serious. They are non-binary. and makin does not get to tell anyone what their fucking gender is LMFAO.

I don't like drama (a little bit of a lie, but only a little), but I will only say that my singular interaction with Makin on the Psycholonials subreddit (hey, why is that subreddit owned by Makin? Interesting question) reinforces the above experiences.

Other than that, my only interactions have been either snooping around, or just irrelevant to this conversation.

@BracingStripes: thx bby

Re: roleplaying, I've been on the fandom since 2010, and from a distance I've witnessed a long cycle of sites cropping up and inevitably falling apart due to pedophiles. It's the kind of thing you'd have to pay professionals to moderate 24/7, and other professionals to talk to governments, but it's not even profitable! It's likely the reason the Roleplay subforum is one that hasn't made the transition from MSPAF to FRAF, and why canon usernames are banned.

@bluebootyraider Noticing some common transmisogyny with that lot ngl. I was never heavily involved in fandom spaces afaik and I'm kind of glad, seeing all of... this. I'm glad this forum site is probably run by at least one or two transfems (I'm presuming but I won't say who as I know that's dangerous and I don't wanna draw attention to it because society shit but y'all are epic ty for your hard work) along with some other fine folks and not just TME people who invalidate other peoples identities as is seemingly allegedly the case in discord and other places.

@forgotpassword I know its off topic but I want you to know you have the best username on the site. Also, agreed, really happy with who are running/moderating this site, I trust them a lot even if I have barely interacted with the majority of them.

@chthonikix thank you for saying what I've been thinking about other fandom spaces and online spaces for quite some time 💜. I don't usually talk about it on my tumblr (or anywhere because society™️ & spam bots & mass reporting bots) due to that site's moderators also being of a similar mind to those that have been allegedly displayed here in recent comments. Transmisogyny is rampant even in the most "leftie" fandom spaces. It's the hottest new target to hate on too along side immigrants in this current climate too. It feels like there are no spaces to talk about it besides leftist discord servers with adults at least into their 30s (and/or over seas folks who on-average seem less susceptible to the North American political stew brainrot) where there are at least like 10 transfems. If you're the only TMA person in a server, things typically get a bit dicey and something you do, some little slip up, makes you the huge weirdo because of course it does. 🙄

@discordantobserver oh thank you! 💜 This is my alt account for when I got locked out (none of my passwords were working) and I decided to make this account as much a cry for help as I could and committed heavily to the bit; so, I'm glad some people are enjoying it. lol Threw together my profile images in like 10 minutes using ezgif and paint dot net.

@bluebootyraider I knew Makin was trans misoginistic towards Hussie but holy fucking shit I didn't realise it was that bad (I haven't interacted with the discord or reddit much). The amount of damage the homestuck reddit and discord has done to the perception of Hussie's gender identity in public conciousness can not be understated, especially when Makin is in control of so much stuff.

It's especially weird too because Psycholonials honestly has a really interesting analysis of gender and gender expression, and explains itself very neatly? Like it's very explicitly nonbinary, as well as an inclusive, unique, and active perspective on it? Honestly the discord as a whole feels very reactionary and the culture seems mostly nostalgic over an early "nonpolitical" Homestuck fandom they wanted or dreamed of existing at some point.

@bluebootyraider It’s funny that you’re using drag to represent Hussies clown gender joke. Drag as a medium tends to be more transmisogynistic than anything which goes on in the official homestuck server. The server has strict anti bigotry rules, which are enforced.

I think it’s kind of stupid to accuse Makin of having too much control of fandom spaces, when these are all spaces which he made.
